How short 7.62x39

No expert here but your OP has my interest. So in my best SB layman knowledge lets get the ball rolling.

AK system I presume? I imagine tuning will come into play.

What is your accuracy expectations? I'd say any barrel less that 10 inches your looking at very tight quarter effectiveness.

NES think tank?

What most call Krinks krinkov etc are roughly 8 inches. Not sure if they made one in 7.62 officially.

The new sbr the Russians where/ are testing the 100 series used a 12.5 barrel.

The problem with building a krink (in 5.45 at least ) is the barrel twist. They used a different twist rate barrel on that. Its very hard to track one down . And not sure if the yugo ones are using the right twist or not.
I say it's safe to assume it would be the same for 7.62 at least. I can't speak of the different twist really help . I've read builds online that where fine. But your mileage will vary.

There's ways to figure out the correct twist with online calculators.

Do you want to build a gun that doesn't lose accuracy ? Or just a toy ?

There's Ak's that's been built with barrel stubs. If you don't know what a barrel stub is , its a chunk that's left in the trunnion when they chop them up. I've seen ones with almost no rifling . They function but are just toys.
These toys you need to mod the recoil spring so it acts as a guide rod since the piston is so short the carrier can jump out.

^^^ Those look pretty cool! I'd like to have something that is somewhat accurate out to at least 50 yards. I heard that 7.62x39 does better in shorter barrels than .223, so I was wondering how short you can still get decent results with in an AR platform. I've also thought about having a Draco converted to an sbr, but not quite sure how to go about that in MA.

The Krink at the last NES shoot was 7.62 and I think the barrel was 6". I could be wrong Ben but the barrel was longer than my 8".

AMD's are 12.5" in 7.62 and they run great. AK Builder also sells a 9" pistol kit:

PDW's in 8-9" are practical & effective in the 7.62 chambering but I wouldn't expect much accuracy past 80-100 yards. It's an AK after all not an SVD.
