If You Were To Buy One Pre Ban AR 15?

So I am new to the AR15 world and I live in NY. My question is this: if you were to buy an AR15 that you would like to modify with all the evil hardware; which pre ban manufacture and model would you spend your money on? I am planning on using it for general shooting (no hunting); home defense and when the SHTF then survival mode etc. Seems to be difficult to find a pre ban receiver (or you have to be lucky enough to stumble upon the sale before its gone). So I am willing to purchase the complete pre ban rifle and modify it as needed. So I guess my question really is which model Colt AR15 is a reasonable choice? Budget lets say 1000-1500 if needed to be that high. Thanks for any input you all may offer. If you need other questions answered on my end...then ask away.

I should first say I know nothing about NY law, but if its like MA...
Go with a Colt. They are the easiest to verify as preban. Don't be afraid of the large pin small pin thing there are adapters to go either way that work great. If you look out of state you can find an A2 style in good shape for $1000 to $1200.
If you go that route you can pull the lower out and build your zombie killer then neuter the leftover upper and make a compliant A2 rifle with a post ban lower.

If I were going to buy a complete rifle, id look for a Colt.

For just a lower, I wouldn't discriminate, provided I had the chance to check the lower for spec before buying (esp magazine fit)

Colt AR-15 A2 Government Carbine... 6520... Have one and love it... Has the collapsible stock, threaded barrel, and the bayonet lug...

My 2 pennies..

Colt Sporter is another choice. The Sporter does not have the bayonet lug however, but as was mentioned in a post above, the lower can be used to couple with a zombie killin upper like a BCM etc...

I've kept the carry handle upper on this one. I'm going to eventually put a flat top BCM upper on it...

I don't know but I seem to see plenty of complete rifles for sale. If you or anyone has a lead on a pre ban lower please chime in anytime. Or pm me.
Thanks. Tim

I like the way you think. A good idea. Keep the options coming. Tim

NY like MA has the same AWB in place (I have a summer home in the upstate area)... The ban prevents the end user from modifying a weapon classified as an assault weapon, by adding collapsible stocks, flash hiders, bayonets (having a lug in place) on post ban weapons...

Ok, thanks. I guess the OP meant those things, by "evil hardware"? I wasn't sure what accessories or upgrade or replacement parts he wanted to have. I tend to think of things like rails or sights or different calibers and barrel twists and lengths rather than those "evil" things, but that's just me.

Call these guys:

http://www.progunservices.com/

They have an excellent inventory and can get you what you are looking for and since they are already in NY, it will be AWB compliant or pre-ban. They usually have a few in stock.

They are located over by Rochester, NY (Exit 45 on the Thruway)

Thanks for the link. Will keep an eye on their page to see what they get in. Tim

I like yourself, wanted to modify the rifle the way I saw fit. The Sporter I have had the fixed A2 buttstock. I swapped it out for the Magpul milspec 6 position tube and MOE stock...

www.dsgarms.com has good prices on kits that include the MOE handguard, grip, and stock w/ tube and carbine length buffer and spring for under $100.00

Good luck...

Sorry for the confusion. Evil hardware as per what the government has disallowed its citizens to have in only select states. Things like hi capacity mags, flash hider, collapsible/folding stock, bayonet lug etc... Tim

Hey thanks for that link. Bookmarked that one for when I get this baby. Tim

What is the advantage in buying a pre-ban to do this?

NY has virtually the same AWB garbage that we do. Prebans get around that bulls**t. You can use a collapsible/folding stock, a flash hider if you want, and have a bayonet lug, and have a muzzle device that is removable if the barrel is long enough to not violate the NFA.

I like the Colts, I have 2 of them, one of which I shoot. I found it like new on GB about 2 years ago for $1000 in NC. I haven't touched it, just shoot it occasionally. I also picked up an Eagle Arms preban from an undercover LApd narc agent. He used it for work and it was in great condition, paid $1000 for it with like 6 preban mags... that's an awsome gun, haven't done anything with it either and my last choice was a PWA stripped lower receiver which I have done a nice upper from Remsport with a red dot...

Sweet collection. Can't wait to get started myself. Tim

What is the advantage in buying a pre-ban to do this?

Like everyone said, to avoid the AWB entanglements.

Honestly, going post ban would not be the end of the world, but when i finally build an AR I want to go balls-to-the-wall and not be limited in what I can do. The collapsible stock is really the crucial item for me but being able to easily interchange muzzle devices will be nice too.

It will be expensive and a little stupid, but I want to build an SPR and be able to have the parts I want on it. When I finally do it price will not be the most important factor.

I've been mostly looking for Colt lowers myself. Again: not really that crucial but if I'm going to build a rifle constructed with kind words, tiny screws, gentle sobbing, and stuffed animals (as opposed to my AKs) I want it to be 100%.
