I am getting back into shooting after a long hiatus and my wife is in the process of getting her LTC. Initally, just going to get my proficiency back up to what is was during my "vacation" in Southeast Asia. She is a total newbie. Being in our 50's we are not the Rambo nor Superwoman.

My buddy want's me to join his club in Somerset, but women are not accepted.

We did stop in the Angletree club this afternoon, and the reception was way less the cordial. I believe there is a club in Mansfield and Wrentham - which I know nothing about, and and perhaps others.
I would appreciate any suggestions
Thank you

Thank you for your input, Rob. Not as helpful as I would have hoped for

I was quite shocked that a club would actually have a "No women" policy in this day and age. It's bad business; bad for promotion of the sport; and doesn't help the cause of expanding the community of firearm owners. Is this an official club policy or something they just do informally? I doubt there is a club in this state that could afford the legal battle if someone tried to make an issue out of a "no women" policy even if their status at a private club would allow such a policy to survive challenge.

There is always the American Firearms School (www.americanfirearmsschool.com) which is spouse/female friendly, but more of a "commercial range that sells memberships" than a "member owned and run club" (very nice indoor range, no outdoor ranges though). If "indoors only" and "range business hours only" suit your needs, it's worth a visit to check it out.

i live in the western ma area so i cant be of any help to you. i just wanted to say that i too am amazed that there is a club with no women allowed especially in this idiot state. any club that has a policy like that is not a club i would want to belong to. im sure that others will post here with clubs that are better and friendlier than that club in somerset. as a long standing officer in my club i know that we would not have any policy banning anybody but someone who just cant follow the rules and destroys club property. good luck in finding a club as there are so manygood ones out there for you.

I agree with you Rob and from a personal point of view, it certainly diminishes "Spouse Approval" of gun related purchases. I took my safety course at American Firearms, will most probably buy our guns there and I like the place. However, we'd like a little more flexibility in hours as well as some outdoor shooting. ALso, the club environment seems to be a great resource for newbies and people, like me, getting back into shooting. We'd also like to do some outdoor shooting,
Thanks for your reply

Chuck, I can tell you that Mansfield F&G (510B East St) is family/children/women friendly. No indoor range currently (project started but needs lots of $$ to complete, so we are realistically looking at a number of years before completion IMNSHO) but nice 50 and 100 yd ranges. You can vary your shooting distances on the 50 yd range.

The club president is on NES, 50 BMG (just be careful there are two usernames here one has a "." and the other hasn't) as a lot of other members. www.mansfieldfish.com

Braintree R&P isn't close by, but extremely women/family friendly. BR&P sponsors the Second Amendment Sisters in MA, allows them free monthly use of a range, etc. www.brp.org

Those are the only two clubs that I am currently familiar with enough to make a statement. I have seen other clubs over the years that I would not consider as "family/women friendly" . . . it wasn't an official mantra, more like a closed "old boys club" attitude by officers and/or members.

Len,
Thank you for this. I just looked at the their website and it does look like a great club. I looked at the application and they do require an existing member's sponsorship.
I am a new NES member, and will see if I can contact an existing Mansfield F&G member to pursue this. It is also quite close for us.

Drop by the next members meeting, October 6th (dinner is 6:30, meeting at 7PM). If it's still daylight I can show you around and introduce you to Fred as well. We'll take care of that little problem for you. [wink] Just to note, a prospective member needs to go in front of the BOD prior to being voted on at a members meeting, so you'd still have to do that on October 27th and get voted in in November's meeting (11/3, right after Jim McKenna gets elected [smile]).

Hi Len, I will take you up on your kind offer. I have already been in touch with Fred, as well. I plan on submitting our application at the October BOD meeting, if all goes well, Otherwise I will do it at the Nov. Meeting. Wife and I stopped by their on Sunday morning and we both liked the little bit that we saw.

Sorry for being late to the party. I'm in North Attleboro, so if you want a tour...I'd be happy to meet you. I'll also be happy to sign your sponsership if needed, or if Len is busy. I've been a member of Mansfield for about 10 years...pretty much since I've moved here...so I'm pretty comfortable with the club. I've also been teaching at the club for the past three or four years.

As Len said, it's very Woman Friendly...and kid friendly...as you can see below with my 7 year old daughter.

We have about 300 some odd active members and I believe around 400 when you add in all the spousal and Junior members.

One of the great things about Mansfield is that the spouse is only 20 dollar more a year...not another 100. And they will get their own key and rights to the club as you.

Anyway, just another local boy offering to show you around the club...do a little shooting if you like to check it out...and talk a little about the club if needed.

C-pher, Chuck and his Wife stopped by the club before the meeting but couldn't stay. I chatted with them some as did Scouter-Rick, they got the tour of the indoor range progress and plan on joining next month. Chuck told me that they dropped by the past weekend and looked over the outdoor ranges.

C-pher - thanks for the invite, sorry I did not read this earlier. I do appreciate it. Wife and I will be attending the BOD meeting on Weds with applications.

Len, thank you for introducing us to some of the members at the September meeting.

It's a bit old now but I just noticed this. Sharon is somewhat in the area you are looking for. Not just a "range" but club.
very nice property, very laid back. You can take anyone you want with you to shoot indoor or outdoor. Very clean too.
