"During the Vietnam War, Jeremiah Denton, a United States Navy pilot, was captured and held as a prisoner of war (POW) for almost eight years. In 1966, Denton was forced to participate in a televised press conference by his North Vietnamese captors. He used this opportunity to communicate to American Intelligence that he and other POWs were being tortured. Denton blinked his eyes in Morse code to spell out the word "T-O-R-T-U-R-E" during the interview, confirming the torture for the first time to the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence and the American public."
