Is this possible or ever been done by anyone here?
To take an ordinary ar15 chambered for 5.56/.223 and swap it fire 7.62x39?
Is it just a barrel swap out or an upper? The rounds seem to fit in the mags will standard mags work?

Just a thought thanks for the input.

Are there any benefits other than the obvious higher caliber in a slightly more accesorizeable platform?
Is accuray better than the AK? Is there distance gained? Anything else I might of missed?

I think the AK is inherently less accurate, due to the way the whole barrel and action assembly flexes during firing. I saw a slow motion video of it on the History channel once, and it did look like there was a lot of stuff moving in different directions that were not in the same axis as the bullet was being fired.

Standard magazines don't work, which is the big hitch [sad] Pre-ban 7.62 mags are hard to find, big bucks, and have a reputation for not working that great.

Just get an AR in 5.45 x 39 instead... apparently regular AR mags will work with that caliber a lot better. Not to mention, the ammo is dirt cheap right now, overall.

I have built some 7.62x39 ARs in the past.
You need a 7.62x39 barrel and a 308 bolt this will work on a standard bolt carrier. You will need a 7.62x39 magazine and this is also the weak link to the whole gun the magazines are known for miss feeding. The muzzle device is also a different size and uses a different thread.
The parts are also harder to get and they cost more.

Yup. I've never heard of a 7.62x39 AR that was reliable.

If you want to shoot an AR cheaply, get a .22lr upper. If you want an intermediate round with better power and range, get an upper in 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel.
