Is this a .50 beowulf?

Friend of mine is cleaning out a safe after a relative passed away. He found "a handful" of these and asked me wtf they are. Apopogies for the crappy cell phone pic

The cartridge has .50 B_O stamped but the middle letter is illegible. By my friend's description, there were no ARs or AK-type rifles in the safe. No DEs either. It's roughly the same size as a .50 AE, but this is JHP with more fluting around the primer. I know nothing about this caliber.

It's not bad now, but for a while, those of us with uppers chamberd in this round had a real problem finding ammo.
