one step up from Mall Cop IMHO

Campus police are designated as "special state police officers" under MGLs. They're not mall cops, they're LEOs with police powers on the grounds of their campus and potentially the surrounding areas. Training varies by school, but some of the better PDs will have officers trained as well or better than the PD of the city they're in.

The cops at the college I went to were nothing more than glorified meter maids. They just spent their whole day writing up parking tickets pretty much. They were damn good at it too.

and the security guards in Boston are all sworn as specials by Boston PD... big deal

The "Inspectors" or starters for all you older folk at the T, were all sworn as specials by the State PD too, and until they made them turn in their badges and warrants of appointment, those police powers and 50 cents got you the Herald.

Mall cops with badges..

Most of the pay scales are pretty nice considering what your day to day stresses entail. Speaking of tail...

A cop apologist and stuck up about it, what's next? Haha

At least the college is taking security seriously enough to acknowledge the need for armed, sworn LEOs. A friend of mine goes to Framingham State and apparently their campus cops are sworn, but unarmed and the issue of arming them is a huge controversy on campus.

Granted, it's not as good as allowing CCW on all campuses, but it's better than disarming even the cops.

ummmm...ya....NOOOO

actually after having a bunch of rapes in and around the simmons campus area they are getting rid of their "mall cops" and replacing them with MA state police trained COPS!

same as the cops you will find at BU, BC, UMASS, Northeastern and MIT...far from mall cops...real guns real badges real hand cuffs real cruisers and i can tell you from experience real jail time...they have more jurisdiction on the campus than BPD...MIT even has their own SWAT team...far from mall cops...get your facts straight

let me tell you if you do apply for this position you need to have incredible patience...their hiring process sucks and theyre having a hard time with getting funding for training/weapons

Most of the local university departments are actually better than BPD.

wait for it...

They don't carry Glocks (except BU I think, go figure) [grin]

Seriously though, the pay is supposed to be competitive with what city LE makes, they get benefits, and at some schools free tuition for their kids or for themselves to take classes. A pretty good deal.

Speaking of tail...

Not bloody likely! [thinking]

Let's just say that the Lesbian population at Simmons far exceeds the straight population!

Not so sure of that. When I worked there (in IT) back in 2001-2, it was Securitas and they barely spoke English. The new (at that time) head of security was a retired LEO from North of Boston and a good guy, but his hands were tied.

NOWHERE near the same as BC or MIT, two places where I know some of the players. BC PD (I worked for them PT for 8 or 9 years) trains with firearms monthly, owns their own simulator, runs active shooter drills continually, etc. They have a ton of money and their brass truly believes in training. MIT also has a professional operation, well funded. I can't speak for the rest of your examples.

What Simmons had after 9/11 was a real joke, so anything will be an improvement. However the working environment is not real good.

Hey now! It is Simmons college, a bunch of cuties to look at all day[wink]

Hardly, unless you consider mostly hardcore Lesbians cuties.

If anyone really is interested in working at Simmons, feel free to Email me from here.

Here's five inklings:

- I was hired into IT as an "inside job" and didn't go thru Personnel at all. First day I was walked into Personnel to get a form signed off to go to Security to get my keycard. She hands me a job app and asks me to fill it out and return it when I get a chance. A month later I walk in with it and start to introduce myself to her. She says to me "I know who you are", my response was "That's amazing, since we only met for less then 5 minutes a month ago." and her response was "No, it's because we have so few men working here!!"

- There was a male president of the college when I was there. At every event he was present, his Wife (not a college employee) was by his side. A few years later, reflecting on it, I came to realize that he did it as a "statement" that "I'm not gay, but a straight man!"

- Occasionally I'd read some events posted on bulletin boards. For Valentine's Day they ONLY had two events: Vagina Monologues and a Gay Dance! Absolutely no events were ever planned for straight people!! I have no problem with the gay events, but a little "equality" for straight people (there had to be some, somewhere on that campus) would have been refreshing to see.

- It was a very "strange environment" in which to work. After 8 months, I resigned, handing in a 3-page letter of resignation. This was due to a number of broken promises, 3 reviews that were never done, violations of labor laws, an unbending demand for passwords to Microsoft Confidential sites (I was under some NDAs from Microsoft Legal Dept - could use the info to assist employer but couldn't give access to anyone else) and some other legal issues that I don't care to put to paper/electrons. My resignation may have contributed to the fact that Simmons College did not renew the contract with the outside IT firm that managed their computer systems (I was a direct Simmons employee, but my boss and her boss were both employees of the contracted firm).

- While I was there I was told that the average tenure of staff was only 2-1/2 years. Many used it to get an advanced degree and then left for a real paying job, etc. They didn't seem big on doing anything to really keep employees for a career.

I would assume that Harvard PD probably has a good deal of funding as well... since they own most of Cambridge.

Campus PDs butt heads with the liberal tree-hugger mentality that runs the colleges, so it's not all about money.

BC PD had a helluva fight to get armed. Ted Kennedy and Father Drinan were on the BOD of the College and fought a valiant battle to PREVENT the college PD from becoming armed. It took them many years to defeat this attitude and many years more until my friend there got the green light to institute some very serious ongoing training . . . far in excess of what municipal PDs get.

Well, between those two I would expect that... Luckily, that's in the past.

Either way, I think the earlier blanket statement about university PDs is incorrect.

Sorry to shock you like that, I thought you already knew... He passed away last year and his life was honored on campus.

I hope that one day they find out who did it, and give him his due reward.

As an aside, an officer was commended a few weeks ago for going into a nitrogen-infused manhole and pulling out two unconscious contractors, without waiting for proper respiration equipment (luckily, nitrogen isn't harmful to people itself, the danger is in not getting enough oxygen). I'm sure other area college PDs have similar stories.

Painting all the departments as "mall ninjas" is just plain ignorant.

That's a damn bit more then any mall cop is required to posses. Regardless, mall cop, school cop, or trash collector, if they do it well and do it with dignity, who are we to judge their job? Geez, so fast to put down and judge others way of paying their bills and feeding their family. No need to lift ourselves up by putting others down. You go mall cops! [thinking]

Some campus police go to the same academies as municipal and MBTA officers go to they get the same training. I went to academy with guys from Bridgewater State and other campuses. And if you dont think that some of the guys in the schools in the city dont deal with serious calls you are fooling yourself. I would say they are a little above a mall security guard.
