Ignoring whether Scriv's attitude is appropriate or not, what usually works for me to avoid these pieces of misinformation- Any time I read anything that immediately piques my emotions more than my intellect, I instantly become suspect of it. At that point, I either move on because I don't care enough, or I research it thoroughly before I believe it. The vast majority of the time, after research, I discover that the original piece is full of it.
