If I'm submitting another form one but the only lowers I can find are marked multi can I submit it as a 556 and do I need to have 5.56 engraved on the lower as well as the trusts name?

I know the intent of the lower is for 5.56 but this is just in the case of an NFA weapon.

i have heard conflicting reports as to whether they will give you shit over a MULTI marked lower--some say they have no problems, others say don't do it.

i was going to try my luck, but ended up with a lower marked 5.56, which is what i am building.

you also need to have the trust name, and the city and two letter state abbreviation engraved. there are also specifications for the engraving which i don't remember off the top of my head, but anyone who does NFA engraving will also know this information.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to try and find a 5.56 marked lower as well. What brand lower did you go with?

Put the caliber you intend to use not what is marked. You can put any caliber you want on the lower anyway so just put 5.56.. The question in box 4c is CALIBER NOT caliber marked on lower. No you do nto have to engrave the caliber you choose on the lower.

Atf wants the caliber the gun is being built in. A friend of mine just had his kicked back for writing multi in the caliber designation box

So, if you build it in 5.56 and get the conversion kits for .22LR and 9mm or something, you would have to put in a tax stamp for all three, even though the lower is the only registered component?

I hate this shit.

get it done in 5.56, then start practicing in the mirror the line "are you talking to me" in case they come looking for more stamp money.

NO!! Put the caliber you first build it in! So write in the CALIBER the BARREL length and the OAL of the ORIGINAL UPPER you will use. When approved you can use ANY upper in any caliber you want to as long as you retain ownership of the ORIGINAL upper. If you later decide you no longer want the ORIGINAL say 12" 5.56 upper you can replace it with another one as long as the same caliber and measurements are met OR you can buy a 9mm 7" upper then simply write the ATF and say I have changed Stamp#XXX from a 12" 5.56 to a 7" 9mm they will send you back a letter saying the change has been noted.

THE UPPER IS NOT A FIREARM AND IS NOT REGISTERED OR STAMPED!!

This was already known, I'm just failing to see why the caliber has to be engraved on the lower for the tax stamp when the caliber is changeable.

Actually, I'm failing to see why I should have to register a damned thing, but that is not the discussion at hand. Thanks for the clarification!
