Alright everyone, just picked up a S&W M&P 15 sport 2. I plan on changing and upgrading parts on it over time and eventually end up with 2 guns. Very first question I have is about the bolt catch/release lever. This seems like it's in the most inconvenient spot. Id like to get some sort of extended lever to make it a lot easier to reach. I've read some stuff about the Magpul BAD lever, but people have complained about "wobble" and overcrowding the trigger housing with gloves on. Any other types that would be worth my time looking into? Also would love an extended mag release, so I can reach more comfortably. Thanks for your input!

Instead of upgrading your M&P, why not shoot it for a while and build a new one based on what you (dis)like about the M&P?

Have you bought a case or 3 of ammo yet?
If not do so, shoot have fun . Learn how to use the system as it is.
Buy a nice sling a few magazines and ammo...

All that bling will not help much if any.

I recommend you try a CMP shoot at a local club or even Appleseed event.

Did I say buy ammo.....
Last few years I have known several shooters with some tricked out ARs and no ammo.

I picked up a Sport 2 to use as a backup to my primary AR. After a couple range trips I've come to realize this rifle is very well put together and accurate. I can't consider it a backup and would rely on it if I had to.

I'll do something crazy and answer the question. The BAD wobbles a little. It's also plenty sturdy, and I don't ever notice it in the trigger housing, but I don't "operate" so I'm not shooting with gloves on.

I wouldn't bother with an extended mag release - unlike the bolt catch, with a little practice you'll have no problem working it with your trigger finger.

As far as the bolt catch being in a bad spot. Insert a magazine with your left hand and keep your thumb up.
Look where your thumb ends up.
Or just smash it with the palm of your hand. Or rack the charge handle.

I'm planning on getting a case today. I'm not getting caught up in the "blinging" out. Don't get me wrong theres a lot of awesome stuff out there and it's fun to dream, but I definitely want to get ample range time before I do anything to it. thanks for the advice!

I did a lot of research between this and the Ruger 556 and read more good things about the sport over the ruger. Especially being a workhorse and not having any problems. How many rounds have you put through it so far?

Thanks! Not so much into the "operating" scene. Just for winter shooting purposes. Im good with the mag release now after messing around with it for a little while.

I'll definitely try this out. When I was shooting yesterday I did smash it with my palm and thats easy. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet. Will experiment. Thanks!

Fan of the BAD lever. Feels right releasing the bolt with the trigger finger like a gentleman shooter instead of slapping the bolt catch like a savage operator.

This is on point. It may be easy to smash it with your palm but I like things to be contained and simply more discreet. If that makes any sense? Lol

LOL its a AR! slap it bang it kick it toss it in the trunk....... I shoot lefty so I know how it feels. The bolt catch is easy for me but mag changes, not so much. little practice and im ok. I still manage a decent mag change shooting the rapids in CMP/NRA high power service rifle. they wont let me use a ambi mag release! Any way something I wish someone said to me before I got the AR build bug.... "buy a bunch of ammo put 2-3k rounds doen range then tinker.
I went from carbine right through full blown tactical to un practical back to basic A2 rifle over the past ten years... although I had AR parts pop out of hiding this year and had to build one last rifle. Optics only build
18" heavy match barrel mid length gas system and I did splurge. I got a ambi safety and mag release on this along with a gun fighter ambi charge handle.... along with a splurge on a scope bit of over kill for a AR sightron SIII 8x32x56 this is part of a future plan for a bolt gun though.

good luck and go shoot......
