M&P 9 - MA features available/required?

I'm looking for clarification of which features (magazine safety, thumb safety, etc.) of the full size M&P 9 are available for sale in MA, and which are required. Specifically, I'm considering getting one and adding an Apex FSS kit, and would like the thumb safety, but not the magazine safety. Is this a MA configuration?

It does NOT matter what's required/available . . . ask your dealer for what you want as he's the final arbiter of what HE will transfer to you.

My FS 45 has the thumb safety and I paid extra for it to find out that it is UNRELIABLE by design and useless! My other M&Ps (3) do not have a safety and only one has a mag safety (bought used and it has a functional purpose for me at this point in time).

When I benched my 45, the carpeting on the bench would frequently change the setting of the safety . . . and that isn't useful!

Well if something is required, such as the grip safety, which I don't want, it doesn't matter what the dealer will transfer, I don't want it. Conversely, if it is available in a configuration that I want, and a particular dealer won't stock it, I'll go elsewhere. That's why I'm looking for definitive regulations, not a random dealer's personal whims.

Sorry, but you just don't get the picture!

There are some dealers who will not transfer guns that are perfectly legal to transfer. There are some dealers who have transfered guns which aren't on any list (and one was indicted for that, facing 8 felony counts but his customers aren't liable or guilty of anything).

Now there are tons of MA dealers who are somewhere between those two extremes. Thus, you tell the dealer what you want (model and features) and ask him if he has it or will get it for you. If he refuses, even if legal, you aren't getting it there and you move on to the next dealer.

Threads like this get posted multiple times/week, invest some time and do some reading and you'll learn a lot here.

Nothing in MGL or regs are crystal clear with easy yes/no answers.

No, you're not listening to the question. I have been reading here for a long time. Most responses are like this, answering a question that wasn't asked. I'd heard this forum was like that. I'm done here.

I believe the S&W website shows which is Mass legal. Yup there are a lot of folks on here that will tell you what you asked. Just ignore them. I do. I caught hell for asking a question on the wrong section. Didn't get an answer either. Could write to tell me I did wrong. How about just answering the darn questions as asked. The best part was that my complaint email I got , I asked about oil undercoating and my complaint email said I asked about oil change.. So don't feel bad that they didn't read or answer your question. I think they see what they think they saw what you wrote. My last sentence is a tee hee..

Go to the latest EOPS Roster of approved handguns, look up the M&P and write down the models listed, then go to the S&W website and look up the features each of those have . . . and you'll have your answer!

There is no law that says every handgun has to have a mag safety, manual safety, built-in lock, etc. Mfrs choose different routes to build what they think is compliant.

And when it comes to used guns at a shop, I seriously doubt that many/any dealers do a checklist of "approved features" or measure trigger pulls prior to reselling the gun . . . generally if that model is listed on the EOPS List (and mfr claims compliant with the AG regs) they just put it in the case and sell it.

OK my 2cents. I don't think any M&P is not Mass legal. I have seen them sold in the state in every configuration , with a mag disconnect, and without. The 9mm and 40 cal never had the cut out for the thumb safety. The .45 has the cut out but rarely has the safety when sold to the general public. Some LEO department ask for the extra safety on the .45. The only M&P's not on the list are the "Pro" series which is just an inch longer. I have no idea why Smith chose not to get that Mass legal. The Pro also comes in a version with a threaded barrel for a suppressor which is sold in states like Texas which allow cans. Good luck on buying an M&P they are a great gun.

They're only really a great gun after Greg does his magic on the triggers! [thumbsup]

He did answer your question, a few times. He also was a lot more patient with your rude condescending attitude than most people would have been. Including myself.

Got mine at 4 Seasons about a year ago. The heavy scratchy MA trigger made it useless for trying to shoot a group.
I installed an Apex kit in my mine to smooth it out. There is no safety button. Just that little tab safety thing on the trigger.
Hey! Just got an Email from 4 Seasons..

S&W Range Kits in 9mm and 40sw are in stock in limited quantities.
The price on these kits is probably going to go way up in 2014.

Ruger SR 45’s in stock. $438.95 credit 431.95 cash, check or debit.
Ruger SR9 Compact, SR40 Compact and SR40 full size pistols are all in stock.

Cheers,
Rich
