Is it safe to shoot 150gn American eagle 30-06 in my stock m1 without bending the op rod? My LGS said it would be fine because it was very similar to the original military round at 148gns.

No thats not the same ammo, mine, I believe is hunting ammo, the boxes have no mention of M1 use and I think is much older.

What a letdown. I was expecting to see a video of someone shooting an American Eagle with an M1 Garand. Hey, they are off the endangered list, right?

This, or the Schuster adjustable gas plug should take care of your ammo situation...

Ported Gas Plug

The newer 30-06 ammo has too high a pressure for the older Garands. Replace the gas system as someone already mentioned, get some CMP surplus ball ammo, buy new ammo specifically made for older garands, or reload your own to spec.

Thank you.

get the schuster, i run one on my M1A for shooting suppressed, it works great.
The adjustable plug can be a pain as it especially if you change from different ammo to different ammo. The ported gas plug from garand gear works well BUT as also mentioned buy some cmp 3006 for 1/2 the cost of most 30-06 ammo. Also you can find PPU brand ammo loaded to M2 ball specs safe for the garand for around .75 per round in bulk cans.
Cabelas usually has it if you want to take a drive, order it for in store pick up. last time it was 399.00 for 500rnds

I agree with the conclusion, but not with the premise.

The issue with modern hunting (or, for that matter, plinking) '06 factory ammo in M1 Garand rifles is not peak chamber pressure. It is, rather, the level of residual pressure at the point where the slug passes the gas port, a/k/a "port pressure." Higher port pressure is the result of using slower burning powders.

There are several excellent articles around on the subject. The only one I can do from memory is Zediker Publishing

Reload. Cheaper, garand safe with the right recipe, no more chasing surplus ammo at gun showa or waiting for the CMP.
