I just received my Troy MCS stock from Tony at Law483 and would be remiss if I didn't share what a tremendously high-quality piece of hardware this is. Absolutely stunningly well-made. Tony should be proud of his brainchild and our own Troy Industries should be prouder still to make it here in The Bay State!

I have the standard A2 configuration and will be mounting my SOCOM-16 in this stock for the time being. The myriad of configurations this rifle can now accept are staggering. From folders, to adjustable buttstocks, (ie: Magpul), to grips, (both fore and aft) and countless optics, BUIS and light combinations - truly amazing. Eventually, the Troy will host an 18" Scout and my SOCOM will reside in HalfMoa's RRM. For the moment however, the SOCOM will be put through it's paces in the Troy MCS. Though the MCS is not for everyone and I'm sure purists will look away in horror, this stock is truly innovative for those who want to take their M1A/M14 forward to a new level. This stock takes the M1A and transforms it into a true platform. I still love the look of a classic M-14 and one will be on the range with me one day, but this to me is a giant leap forward....

Those out there thinking of upgrading and modernizing their rifles should really give Law483 a shout. Sage/Vltor are not your only options and this in my view is the better of the three. The modular design, BUIS/cowitness opportunity, hassle-free optics mounting and no need for tools for takedown were a big draw for me, (plus it's made in Massachusetts - now at the old Springfield Armory). I'll be spending my afternoon mounting my SOCOM on deck and will hopefully have preliminary range reports available in the coming days. For the moment, I've attached a nude photo of the Troy MCS - will update you when it get's dressed...

No issues with shell ejection from other shooters, field tests and testing with the 82nd Airborne. I still need my Harris stud and a sling, but she's ready to roll!

I can't stop fondling this rifle - there may be something wrong with me! [smile]

STOOOOOOOOOOP

youre doing it again!!!!!!

damnit now i need a socom too...seriously mark...i had marked this rifle off the list because i didnt like any of the pistol grip modifications for it...now...shit now it looks like...no...looks better than a .308 AR!!!

grrrrrrrrrr...i was saving for a national match m1a too

Ha! You're powerless against the force Luke... [shocked] Actually, you can mount any M1A in here you want - even a National Match. If I had my druthers, I'd put an 18" Scout in here, but the SOCOM is just fine by me. I like AR-10's, but I love this so much more...It's a badass little beast isn't it??...[wink]

A super feature of this stock, is you can mount any AR buttstock, grip, BUIS sight or optic you want!. Need a longer LOP? Go A2, or a Vltor collapsible. Shorter? RRA Entry or a CAR telescope. Want a long range system? Add a Magpul PRS woth adjustable LOP and cheek riser, throwlever on a Leupy and you're GTG...I love this thing....

Did you look at the stock setup from Sage at all? I like my M1A in the wooden stock - but now I am getting the urge for another one - in either a Sage or one of these Troy setups.

Sage now makes an EBR stock for Garands too - sounds like a perfect solution for one of the woodless Dane's I got from CMP a few months back.

Sage makes an awesome stock. I have a bit of trigger time with one - truly innovative, but I think the Troy goes a step, (or two) beyond. The designer, (Tony at Law483) and our own Troy Industires produced a stock that the M1A doesn't just lay into, but actually gets enveloped by. In many ways, it still has the classic lines of the USGI stock, but it's more ergonomic than the USGI or the Sage.

Also with the Sage, the lower stock is mounted directly to the gun - you have to remove your stock oprod guide and affix a mounting block which then holds your receiver into the stock - then you have to bolt the unit together. In order to field strip your rifle, you need tools to disassemble, (I think they actually sell a Sage folding tool for this purpose) - it's time consuming. With the Troy, you drop your trigger, push am M-16 pin and pivot the unit apart - optics remain mounted and undisturbed.

Which brings me to optics. Though there are some unique ways to mount optics on the Sage, the reality is you still have that large gap, (the receiver) to contend with. One way is of course to mount a Sadlak, SEI, or SAI mount to the side of the receiver. This is all well and good, until you find that your receiver is slightly out of spec - then it's fitting time. There are countless threads about folks with side mounted scope mounts who cannot attain zero. Then, there's a clip mount picatinny which uses the scope itself to gap the receiver with the front mounts on the forward scout mount on the Sage. The most unique, is using an off-set LaRue AR-15 scope mount to attach the scope to the rear of the forward unit and literally hang the scope over the receiver.

The Troy does not have these issues. The rail is inline with the receiver and continues back to the buttstock mount - you can put optics anywhere you want them. Purists, (which I am one to a degree), will scoff at the reality of using the rear sight base to eliminate, "one of the best battle sights ever". Truthfully, this was a tough pill to swallow until I actually used some of the BUIS sights available on the market today. Troy BUIS, or LaRue, or GG&G or BT are not cheap pieces of folding metal - they are advanced, accurate and fast irons, so for me the loss of the stock sights is a non-issue. Plus, the ability to cowitness irons with optics is a big selling point - something impossible on a Sage or a stock M1A....

Does anyone know if a Springfield socom II in a Sage EBR stock is MA legal? I'm new to NES and look forward to the info you all can offer. Thanks in advance.

If the SOCOM has a muzzle brake on the barrel instead of a flash hider you should be legal.

The MA AWB regulates flash hiders, adjustable stocks, pistol grips, and mag capacity. The regular M1A gets away with having a flash hider because it has no pistol grip.

I'm planning to pin the stock (such a shame) and run the 10 round mags. I think this will keep me in the clear. Thanks for the feedback.

You can use 20 round magazines, they just need to be pre-ban magazines here in MA.

WOW! I thought this thread was dead forever - it's amazing what people dig up. [grin]

Blitz1 reminded me several moons ago to post some pics of my updated Troy MCS and I have failed miserably. Believe it or not - it's still not finished, but is almost there. Dench and I are going to try and mount an M4 Mamba sling on her this weekend and with the Trijicon/KaRue heading for my Anvil AR-15 NES006, optics will be the last hurrah...

if the rifles in the current configuration as it is in that photo then theres no way a m16 MAMBA would fit, never mind a M4 MAMBA.

the m16 one would at least fit around the stock, the m4 is made to go through the slit in the stock.

both the m16 and m4 mambas require the front sling swivel thats found under the hand guards

MassMark do you think that a Magpul PRS stock would work on the Troy setup? Your setup is very nice.

Oh ye of little faith...That's not the Dench I know. We'll make it work...[grin] Besides - I now have a tracking number on my Anvil Arms upper - it's in Stratford CT right now and there's a shot it will be here in time for the shoot...[wink]

Thanks - I absolutely love it! The Magpul PRS seems almost designed for the Troy MCS, but for me it didn't make much sense to put a precision rifle stock on what is essentially for me a fighting carbine. If I ever drop an 18 or 22" M1A into this, I think a PRS would be ideal. As it stands, I love the A2 stock...

The Magpul PRS seems

Make sense. Too bad the magpul 93 stock is not compliant in MA and also so hard to find. I think it would really complete the Troy setup. I'm struggling as to which setup I want to run. Either the Socom 16 or the shorter Socom II. If I go shorter I think i'll go with the Sage EBR and if longer I'll try the Troy. Has anyone seen the JAE 100 stocks? they look pretty sweet and word is they greatly enhance the m14 setup.

The Sage is a nice unit, but has it's drawbacks in my opinion. The Troy is awesome no matter what rifle length you sink into it....Also, the SOCOM-16 and SOCOM-II are both 16". The Scout is 18" and the Standard is 22"...

Yes and I'm still waiting. [wink][smile]
