Looking to buy a for home defense pistol with the following criteria:

Free state trigger (I wish)
No safety
Mid-size pistol allows 3 finger grip
Doesn't require having a gun smith do any work
Track record of reliability
Barrel 3.5 - 4 inches
Price not an issue

Love to hear what you think.

Thanks

My vote is for a browning hi power. Has a safety but awesome gun and is large capacity.

As said above browning hi-power or a Beretta 92 since there are standard capacity (15 rounds) pre-ban mags available.

For a home defense gun you want as many rounds as possible available (in case of multiple attackers) and 15 in the mag is better than ten. For a home defense pistol you can afford to buy a full size pistol (such as the Beretta 92) simply because you don't need to worry about concealment. The extra weight and barrel length (which means longer sight radius) will also be helpful in absorbing recoil and maintaining accuracy.

So my recommendation is to select a handgun where pre-ban standard capacity mags are available. I believe the new Beretta 92's (as well as the Taurus one) accept the older mags so you won't have to buy used if you don't want to.

If you can get your hands on a Glock, you can find pre-ban mags.

The Ruger p-series also has 15 round (9mm) preban mags available.

I have a 92FS in my nightstand for when things go bump at night.

Question.....you state 9mm or 45.......why the big swing in caliber size?

Also you never stated semi or revolver.......if 9mm and 45 are all you would consider then guess a revolver is not on your list.......but for home defense you can't beat a s and w 686+ ....357 mag but can load 38+p for in the home and Holds 7 rounds so same cap as a 1911 and is as reliable as you can get.

Wow, did no one recommend a glock?

Two people did.

Glock 21 is my HD gun. 13 rounds, or 15 if you have +2 baseplate on your preban mag

Or 30 rounds if you buy a Kriss Super V mag extender for your preban glock 21 mag.

Saw this in the classifieds

When people offer suggestions, do they read the op parameters, or is this just a shout out to your favorite gun thread? No safety shortens the list considerably, as the original request pretty much describes a glock or m&p to a "t".

SR9C, with pinky extension on mags, with drop in ghost trigger that gets pull down to 3.5 lbs..

M&P .45c, add the Apex trigger stuff. It can be hard to find, but they're out there.

I have the .40c (as well as 9mm + .357 Sig capability) and love it with the Apex stuff. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't settle on the .40c because a .45c was impossible to find at the time.

:)

I like revolvers and on my wife's side of the bed resides a Ruger gp100 3 inch loaded with 38+P.

I prefer a pistol.
