Finally got to to the range today after months of waiting to shoot the new mosin I got for xmas and it was great... Shoulder feels nice and kissed after a bunch of rounds.

It took a while to sight in but, got it hitting good at 250yds. I didnt have any problems but I was surprised at how much I had to slap around the bolt to work it and loading the mag was strange and not very smooth. Didnt try the stripper clips... Forgot them at home.

you guys with mosins find the same stuff? I guess its a matter of getting used to it too. Had a nice time though, little over conserned with the corrosive ammo thing but I cleaned the hell out of it so I should be good.

Good on you! Glad you had a good time. Stiff bolts are very common in mosin nagants. I was lucky in that picked up a used one (from a fellow NESer) so the bolt had been broken in. The more you shoot it the more it will break in. I have also found that despite all my efforts at cleaning, that when I heat up the barrel more cosmoline will STILL sweat from the rifle. I have used grease on my bolt (the same grease I use for my break open shotgun) with success. Keep shooting her and she will break in more with every shot. Enjoy!

Watch iraqvet mosin videos.

Some times the bolt heads lips get dinged . Check to see if a round clips in the bolt head easy. Iraqvet has a video about it.

Also check a spent round and the chamber and the face of the barrel . A friends chamber was leaving marks on the cases . One of mine I didn't clean as good as I thought .

My type 53 action is smooth .

That's exactly it - with Mosins that have seen heavy use the the inside of the round face on the bolthead (in which the cartridge rim sits) gets thickened or bent inwards making it increasingly difficult to seat the round when you slide the bolt forward.

With my M44 which I picked up this summer, I had to slam the bolt shut very hard or use a large amount of force to chamber a round - in the end I replaced the bolt head (and checked headspace) and now it chambers like butter.

Put in vise. Tap lip with brass and hammer . Save cash from not buying parts for ammo.

It's a mosin hammer works 50% of the time .

Mag loading or feeding problems can be the stock or the other parts in the mag needing adjusting .

Yeah - I tried that a few times and just couldn't get it to work - the bolt face was just too damaged to peen it back enough.

Did you take the bolt apart and clean it out good. That damn cosmoline gets into everything. I have cleaned the one I shoot the most at least 5 times and I still get spots on my glasses when I shoot it. The corrosive ammo issue is real but a good spray down with some windex after shooting will keep it in check until you have a chance to clean it.

No cosmoline left that I can see, stripped everything and got it out... The bolt face looks great no dings or anything noticable

My m44 had a really sticky bolt at first. I cleaned it up pretty good then brought to an NES shoot for the first time. I had to beat the bolt so hard the bayonet deployed on its own! A nice feature if the bolt jams up.

After I cleaned it up again, scrubbed the chamber really good, let the disassembled bolt sit in hoppes over night, then lubed it up, it's pretty smooth, for a mosin.

The strippers help loading if you do it right: Insert stripper into bolt, grab the tip of the top round and angle it up a bit, put thumb on back end of top round and push down. Rounds should slide right in. Just jamming them in with your thumb doesn't work so well.

First time out with mine I had a lot of trouble with the bolt. I literally had to slap it open and closed. Followed directions on this video and it did wonders for the bolt. (I did not do anything to the firing pin spring)

Nice vid slickrick. Good find. Been out once with my 91-30 and the bolt was quite tight. Other than that it is a joy to shoot! I'll be picking up a 20G and 410 G copper brushes today and run those through the chamber!
