Hello,

The wood that surrounds the barrel, both top and bottom is loose. When shooting the top piece will actually slides forward taking the rear barrel band with it. The wood is loose, and I can't really get my clamps any tighter. New Clamps? OR.....

I was thinking of taking some fiberglass insulation and lining the top and bottom wood. Thin layer on bottom and thicker layer on the top piece to push down. This way the wood would be tight around the barrel. Since the barrel is currently able to flex within its wood shroud, if you want to call it that.

The insulation would act as a stuffer. IDK any ideas?

Use cork board as a shim. But you are on the right track. Look up "bedding" your mosin. Lots of info on there - usually done to improve accuracy, but will also end up putting shims in there to tighten up the wood in the bands.

My problem is getting cork. I ran up to michael's craft store and bought some cork. I think its too thick, 3/32 and I still pressed it thin. The music places use cork thats 1/32 in for clarinets, but i dont know if that will still work. I called one music place and they wouldn't sell a strip of it.

Well, if 1/32 is too thick, whats the problem? You can certainly use glass insulation, I would add some epoxy like you do when you bed the barrel.

Cotinuing the down the cork road, get a bottle of wine, and slice the cork longways for the thickness you need. A razor knife would help; if you have a band saw, its easier. then you should have nice thin strips of cork.

I thought about what you said about shimming it too. I tried to completely bed the barrel, no luck (now). But shimming the tip made it a lot tighter and I had less walk of the wood shroud and no lift of the barrel. The shot group at 125yds is improved. I will try and get thin cork to bed the entire barrel. Thank you...
