today, billk, dxdextreme and myself went out to blast off a ton of rounds. my mosin nagant seems to have a problem now.
i fired about 40-50 7.62R rounds today, and about 7 rounds were struck by the firing pin but did not fire. we were also using 6 different types of ammuntion, 3 of those had this problem. Billk looked at the rounds with the struck primers and said he thought it looked like the firing pin is striking the primer to hard and crushing it.
i did take the bolt apart, and i put it back together last week. i used a guide to do it, but i was not sure if i did it correctly. i may have somehow cuased the firing pin to strike harder.
the rifle worked fine before i took the bolt apart. any advice?

I doubt you did anything wrong taking apart the bolt. These things were made for uneducated, illiterate Russian conscripts.

First time I've heard a firing pin was hitting "too" hard. When you reassembled the bolt, did you use the tear-drop shaped tool to check the firing pin protrusion? One slot (the deeper one) should pass over the pin when it is sticking out of the bolt face, and the other slot (the shallower one) should actually "rock" a little on the pin because the pin is deeper than the slot. By using a screwdriver on the end of the firing pin, you can change the length of protrusion.

Here's a good reference if you used something else - the tool is shown at figure 41:

Strange that it should stop firing after already putting that many rounds downrange.

Maybe Dr. Milsurps 4 Me will have a solution....

If you recently took the bolt apart and aren't sure if you did it right, the firing pin distance is about the only thing you can screw up, and it's consistent with your symptoms. So the first thing I'd check is the firing pin protrusion distance, as USMA-82 describes above.

well ill have to wait till the next time i go out shooting with someone who also owns a mosin. i dont have that tool, and i dont have any calipers.

so next time i go out, somone with more experiance can show me. im used to m16 and AK47 bolts, the mosin one is just really odd for me, and ive never actualy been shown by anyone in person.

if the firing pin is coming out to much, how do i fix that?

The firing pin screws into the bolt. If it's coming out too much, you give it another turn in. If it's not coming out enough, you give it another turn out. This web page is a good disassembly/re-assembly guide that shows you all you need to know.

I'd heard good things about those guys. But I found them disorganized, stuck up, and generally a pain to deal with.

i ordered the tool for the firing pin and i also ordered the manual, so hopfully ill learn some useful tips about the process.
