First of all, I personally feel this is an ammo issue but I'm a little uneasy by it.

I was at the range this weekend slingin' some slugs, some shot (as Hickok would say). I started off shooting some clays with Winchester #7 from a bulk pack. Out of 3 boxes of shells, almost everyone had a problem. After firing I couldnt pull the forend back to eject the shell. I had to really yank on it. A few times I had to knock the stock on my knee while pulling back on the forend. This made me pretty nervous as I had just cleaned the gun the day before, thinking maybe I didnt put everything back correctly. Afterward we went over to put some slugs and buckshot on some other fun targets, all of these ejected fine, no issues.

So I felt better knowing these ejected fine, probably not the gun. Does anyone know what might be the issue? Bad batch of ammo? Just weird to me like just about every shell had this problem.

Second thing, is upon inspecting the gun, I noticed two marks inside the breach, on the roof of it if you will. Doesn't look like markings that have been there as I havent noticed them before. Looks like something wacked it and gouged the metal. I can get some pics up of this for clarification. I've read a lot of people saying marks in the breach is normal but I'm not expert to say these are normal or not. It doesnt look like drag marks so I dont think its a burr on the bolt, it looks as if a hard object dinged the metal.

This happened to my buddy with a new 500. He put 5 shots through it then handed it to me. I got one shot off then, like you described, it was very hard to eject the round then wouldn't feed properly.

We ended up using my Wingmaster for the rest of the day. ;)

Not sure what the problem was was but he brought it back to the shop and they fixed it pretty easily.

It has no issue firing or feeding rounds. Functions flawlessly other than this problem. I've used #5, 6 and 7 in the past and it ran through flawlessly as well. I suppose the next step would be to put aside that batch of ammo and go pick up a new box elsewhere and see if it still has the same problem.

Seeing as you were having trouble on moving targets and not with stationary ones I'll suggest this.......are you accidentaly applying rearward pressure to the pump when shooting at clays? This can cause the pump to stick. Seems like you had no problems when shooting slugs and buckshot when not "moving" the gun is why I suggest this. A friend of mine had a new mossberg.......he was getting pissed.....every round he fired the pump stuck after he shot it.....when I tried th gun no problem at all. When I watched him closer I could see he was holding the pump very far forward and could see he was applying rearward pressure on the pump....he adjusted his grip and the pump never stuck after that. Something to think about anyway.....and the way to diagnose a mechanical problem is start with the easy stuff first.

Thanks Whacko

I thought this too. I actually made it a point to shoot stationary and consciously push forward on the forend. Still had the issue as did two buddies who shot it as well.

I had the same exact problem with Winchester super x #7 and #8 in my 500. Bought some remington game club loads, problem gone. It's definitely an ammo issue.

I had the same issue at the range. New gun, first box of shells no problem, then I started another box of shells that was given to me. Every one would not eject. Went home, cleaned the gun, then put 50 shells thru the gun (the shells I bought) and no problem.

agree sounds like an ammo issue. perhaps the brass is bulging? have you inspected the winchester brass before vs. after firing?
i've never found ammo that couldn't run in a mossberg 500/590, although i'm sure it exists somewhere....perhaps you found it

this, had a friend that got I believe it was tula, almost 1/2 the rounds stuck and had to slam the butt on the ground holding the pump to eject the shells. they were either 00 buck or slugs and the shells had short brass at the base like sporting rounds do. it ran fine with my Winchester 00 buck

I have inspected them, not closely so I may very well have missed something. I've shot this stuff in the past without an issue so I'm not sure that its my gun just not liking the Winchester Super X #7s in general. Good to know others have had the problem though. I've put a lot of different ammo through mine without ever a hiccup. Now all of a sudden I have 75 problem #7s.

Some of the cheaper game/target loads have buffer leakage issues. If you notice this issue with shot only and not slug, take a good hard look at the ammo before you feed the beast. I've run into this issue with Remingtons and Mossberg pumps.

Winchester bulk pack sucks. I've had issues with it too.

If other target loads work fine, I wouldn't worry about it

Try some high wall birdshot and see if it still does it.
Make sure you have the barrel nut cranked down.
With mine, I crank it down as tight as I can and back it up 1 click..
I suspect as others said, an ammo issue.
The mark at the top of the breach is normal.
Both of mine have it.
