Has anyone shot one of these? Reviews seem to be mixed; any firsthand experience?

Has anyone run one (presumably 20"+) for three-gun?

It looks like Mossberg might have gone and made a passable "tactical" semi-auto shotgun at a price I might be willing to pay.
Anyone seen one on a shelf lately?

I had an SPX that I picked up for short money between a sale and some gift certs at Dick's. It was kind of neat to shoot, and I did a little bit then put it in my closet and for got about it until I decided I wanted to start shooting multi gun kind of stuff.

I found a 28" barrel on line for short money, had it cut to 22" and threaded for chokes and the front sight relocated. Then I picked up a Nordic Comp mag tube since I wanted 8+1 and to have the mag tube and barrel to be the same length. Removed the pic rail and ghost ring, added the Nordic bolt handle and took it to my first match.

The gun handled very well, and ran much better then I did. If you are thinking about the 930 for a game gun, I say go for it, I like mine.

Long story short, if I were going to buy a 930 to shoot like this, I would do what Mike said, and buy a waterfowl model and mod from there.

This is what I like to hear.

Forgive my ignorance... but why does one need to have it cut to 22"? Why not another length?

Same question. I have short stubby arms, and 20"+ barrels don't agree with me. Unless I'm going to find it impossible to knock down steel, I like going as short as humanly possible.

Sticking the largest magazine tube I can isn't a big consideration for what I'm planning.

I wanted the barrel cut behind the porting, to stay out of open, on a 28" you have plenty of room and can cut it to a longer length, but I wanted 8+1 and to have the barrel and mag the same length. Personal preference really, I didn't want a field gun, but I didn't want an 18.5" barrel either.

Barrel length isn't a huge issue, if you want 18" get it cut there and run whatever mag tube you want. Chokes are more important than barrel length.
If you do get a vented rib, its best to have it cut at the bridge, which rules out 18.5

My 930 has been running great, no malfunction in around 600 rounds, much more reliable then my 1187.

I see... so you find a 28" barrel and cut it down to 22" for 2 reasons... 1) so your factory barrel remains untouched, and 2) so the newly cut 22" barrel matches flush with the 8+1 mag extension you'll be putting on. Am I picking up what you guys are putting down?

And then you have the 22" barrel threaded for chokes... check.

Are you guys finding that your 930's are picky about ammo? Or do they run just about everything 2.75" and up?

I got the waterfowl model because I did not want rifle sights or a rail, it was also cheaper and comes with 3 chokes. The barrel needs to be cut because of the ports. Cutting the factory barrel wasn't an issue on the waterfowl. They are cheap to replace, SPX might be different with the sights.

I run a 8+1 or a 9+1 tube depending on what the rules are

Sounds like it might be a plan. It seems like the 18.5 barrels aren't great for threading, and can't be found regardless.

Is it just me, or is getting a shotgun that doesn't suck setup right a much larger pain the ass than a carbine or handgun?

I shoot wallyworld remingtons and federals, its the cheapest stuff I have founds. I haven't tried anything other bird shot. Its runs around 1200fps. I was going to try some 1145fps gun club, but haven't got around to it.

For slugs, I have tried Centurions, they are cheap, but not that accurate and shoot very low left for me. Remington reduced recoil group much better and are only slightly low at 50y

Not really, there are only a few are acceptable for 3gun. The 930 can be set up for around $600 including cost of the shotgun. Its a good low cost option, it runs, but does not load as easy as a benelli

You are picking it up just right. Anymore, it is less that I wanted to be able to restore the gun to SPX configuration as it is I happened to have an SPX that I wasn't using and wanted to shoot matches with it.

I have run nothing but walmart value packs (fed, win, rem gun club) and walmart slugs and buck, from 2 3/4 #8's to 3" 000 buck. Eats everything I have stuffed into it.

One thing I noticed on my 18" barrel is the walls were a bit thin. I am sure you probably could thread it, but I knew I wanted 22" anyways.

I spent like 2 good months on enos reading the 930 threads before I set out with what I wanted. I am glad I did though, it is a real fun shotgun to shoot. One of these Sundays I am going to take down to the club and shoot a few rounds of trap with it. The looks should make it all worth it. [wink]

Not to be a downer but as far as I could understand from MA law and the stupid MA AWB, if you live in MA, having a semiauto shotgun with a magazine tube or box magazine that holds more than 5 shells is illegal. In a pump you can have as many shells as you want since its not semiautomatic. Stupid law I know but thats how I understand it.

Am I wrong on this?

I'd rather not get into this discussion here. There are two different laws at play here, and it'll turn into yet another one of those threads. You're not wrong when it comes to the AWB, but federal definitions blah blah blah high capacity feeding devices blah blah blah. This issue isn't clearcut.

I'm not looking to hold more than 5+1 for this particular gun, at this time.

Sorry I was not trying to hijack the thread. I actually meant to say +1 for the 930. ive shot them and they seem pretty good. Then I sawa the 8+1 mag comment and got to thinking. Got a link to the 2 laws?

I talk to Dan, he tells me what to do, I then do what I think is right, waste time and money, then end up doing what Dan said.

hahaha, I try not to beat up on Dan, you should see some of the conversation chains that have gone on between us. I have to think he shakes his head when he sees a message in his inbox from me.

Thanks for all the info guys... I'll probably be sending you PM's whenever I get around to picking one up to make sure I'm getting the right stuff [wink]
