I’ve been eyeing a .308 bolt action as my next rifle, and I was pretty much set on saving up for some variation of the Remington 700 until I stumbled across a Mossberg Talo “Night Train” on the shelf of a local retailer.

It’s a variation of Mossberg’s ATR which comes with a factory mounted and boresighted Barska 4-16X50mm scope with a sunshade, flip-up scope caps, a retractable bipod and a sling. Price tag on the rifle was $430 (I’ve seen them online from $393-$475).

I’m assuming I’m looking at an obvious step down in quality from the Remington, but does anyone know how much farther of a step we’re talking? I assume the Remington is going to be far more accurate than I am, and I don’t know how long it would be until I could afford one. On the other hand, the Mossberg is extremely affordable and comes fully equipped out of the box.

Is it worth picking up the Mossberg “for now,” and then selling a few years down the road when I’m ready for the Remington? Or would I just be throwing away cash on a rifle I’d be disappointed with.

From what I have read, the Savage is the way to go out of the box for the bolt action .308 accuracy. I have no idea about the mossberg. The 700 is always a great action and a decent rifle but a little pricey comparatively. And I'd infact like to build a rifle on the 700 action eventually for extreme long rang accuracy. But were talking in the range of $3000.00 with the scope so that might be somewhere in the not so near future.

This all means nothing though, because these are the opinions that I have read based on the particular application that I want the rifle for. What do you want the rifle for?

I've got a 700P in .223.......very accurate.
My next bolt gun will be a Savage 12BVSS in .223. My daughter has a FP10 that is a tack driver.
I've seen a few of those ATRs up close......not very impressed.
Save a little longer and spend your money once. Every time you shoot a rifle of higher quality, you'll enjoy it more.
