I've often scoffed at the concept of an EMP causing issues as I held the belief the effects of nuclear blast causing the EMP would be a much more serious threat to contend with. I've understood there are natural causes but I had no idea the '89 blackout of Quebec was caused by a solar flare.

If you don't want to watch the entire video I'd suggest at least watching the last 15 minutes.

You might also want to click on the link I included if you want to read NASA's report of the Quebec blackout.

My 1985 carbureted GMC k2500 with standard transmission will still run... nice! [smile] Now to stock up on fuel... OR I could just get it from all the non running cars in the neighborhood.

It's difficult to find hard tech on EMP effects at different distances away from different sized blasts. I don't believe it would be possible to shut down anything other than a small portion of the country with a single EMP due to the inverse squared law.

I always knew sun was evil. Lets bomb it before it has a chance to attack us. [laugh] This is an old BS flick they were running of tv along side 2012, life after people, etc. Fear and hope is the best way to sell stuff. So spooky music, clever staging and nonsense ideas with a grain of truth make for good tv.

Did you notice how they said the ONLY 1 in 10 cars shuts down? Guess why? Because numerous tests, both gov and industry, show that practically all cars keep running and few that do shutdown can be restarted immediately. Yet internet loves to talk about EMP proved cars. So of course at the end they show a road littered with cars (most of them for some reason are steaming) and only the internet fantasy cars are chugging along. [rolleyes]

Learn more about the subject and you will find most of this video entertainingly funny. Now, I am not saying that large scale EMP is not possible – it is, but probability of occurring are very low and potential damage is likely to be relatively small. Yet there are plenty of real things that most people ignore because they are not as sexy as EMP.

Not true!!

Your capacitor will be shot for sure and maybe even your ignition coil and solenoid as well. During the Castle Bravo test in the 50's capacitors as far away as Hawaii were in steep demand do to being wiped out by the EMP. You had better keep a couple in a steel box under the seat just in case.
