Recently got my first very own 357 revolver, the venerable Smith 686+ with a 4 inch barrel. I shot it for the first time yesterday and said aloud "wow, this is what power feels like!"

Looking into what cartridges to use for SD and for hunting. Any recommendations boys? Anything you would change on the gun? it wears a hogue rubber grip, and it feels great in the hand and to shoot but i would also like some pretty wood grips for show. any preference?

the trigger in single action is just amazing, i love it. it has to let off at close to 3 pounds or so with zero take up. Double action is on the heavy side of probably 8 lbs or so, but its very smooth.

Really a very nice gun, very happy with it. I was hitting what ever i wanted with it yesterday without struggle.

Just got back from the Sportsman's Den, picked up some assorted .38/.357, HKS Speedloader, and a set of rubber Hogue grips. I liked the original S&W wood grips, but the Hogue grips seem to offer more clearance for speedloader use.

I love the look on the faces of the students the first time we play "Bang,Bang, Boom." They know it's coming and it still gets them!

I love playing Bang, Bang BOOM!

.357 Mag, .44 Mag, and .500 Magnum.

try some hot 38 Spl +p loads, see if you shoot better with them, the .357 can be a handful and 2 hits with a good .38 load is better than a missed second shot with.357.

That is the great thing about that gun, you can shoot .38 spl wad cutters up to the real good .357 stuff that will break your wrist

[rolleyes]

I hope you just forgot the sarcasm icon......

I usually shoot the .500 Mag one-handed before letting a newbie try it, to show that it can be easily handled.

Michael (no broken wrist yet)

The S&W 686 is the "perfect" pistol in my opinion. You will be amazed when shooting 38 specials through it, no recoil and fairly cheap to shoot and you never have top worry about FTF or FTE. Enjoy it!

I hate .357 mag revolver, so I sold off all my .357 mag revolver in favor of .500 mag or .460 mag. As usual, "Go Big or Go Home".
