I received my new flintlock about 2 weeks ago, but was too busy to make it to the range. Yesterday I made it and all I can say is WOW! Really fun. The rifle is a copy of a JJ Henry Scrollguard made by Steve Losey. Has a 44" Rice barrel in .54. I posted some photos earlier, but if you missed it see below.

I used a .530 ball with a lubed .010 patch and 70 grains of FFG as a starting load and FFFFG as a priming powder. I set up a target at 50 yards just to see what my new rifle could do. I ended up firing 12 shots off the bench with a damp wipe of the bore in between each shot. Below is a picture of my target.

The top hole was my first shot followed by the next 3 moving downward till I got the hang of it. The one ragged hole is 8 consecutive shots. I could not be happier with my rifles performance. I am so hooked. Next time I will move it out to 100 yards and start figuring out what she can do.

A Tri-Corner hat is in order. Nice rifle, I mean smoke pole...

Nice rifle. I have a TC Pennsylvania Hunter. While it is not period correct, please be sure to wear safety glasses that have good side protection.

Very nice! After a few more times out you need to time yourself to see if you can get three accurate shots out in a minute. It's a tough one, but I'm sure you can do it. Once you get that accomplished your earn your blue suit!!! [smile]

He's gonna need to roll some "cartridges" and tap load them to do that. Not sure that's a good goal to be setting for someone new to this....

A friend of mine has taken deer with just about everything imaginable and has been trying to do it with a flintlock for a a couple years off and on with no success. Suffice to say he has a new appreciation for the hunters back then and since he hasn't been able to do it, I do too.

They are really neat in general and as always your detailed posts are great to read. Enjoy the gun.

I have a TC Hawken, .45....haven't fired it since I inherited it....I dread cleaning it! [rofl]

No problem to clean a TC. Just remove the barrel and the touch hole (which is screwed in or nipple if not a flint). Boil about a gallon of water and put it in a bucket with some dish detergent. Get some gloves to hold the barrel. Stick it into the water and use a cleaning rod with a tight patch. You can suck the water up into the barrel and dissolve the fouling. Do it for a few minutes. When you are done, the extra hot water dries the barrel. Then go back with clean patches and oil everything. Easy.

Very cool! Off and on I try to track down an original Silas Allen flintlock but have yet to be successful. Some of those Those old old flintlocks are gorgeous.
