My new Ruger SR45 and my thoughts

I got one for about $425.

Very much the same first impression. Gun was pretty dirty OOB, full of grease. What the OP did is a must if you want to shoot this gun for the first time.
It's really not that hard, Rugers are some of the easiest to pull strikers on. If you don't at least clean it, I can't see it being at all reliable with all that shit in there.

I'm thinking the trigger will smooth over time much like my other Rugers did. I ran 50 reloads thru it with no issues the other day in between cutting wood. No issues, and it was accurate. Good groups. But this one won't go in the holster until I can get a better feel for the trigger, right now it's just too unpredictable. I'm hoping it smooths up nice with time like the 9 and 40c's,.....but I can't say it's as nice as either of them were OOB. With those the takeup is easy to anticipate....SR45...not so much. I dry fired it a bunch and started to get a feel, but it's still touch and go. Worst case scenario, I have to buy a couple parts from that place in NC that snazzes up the Rugers. Can't remember the name....but I think the polished aluminum parts they have might fix some of the roughness with the striker indicator, etc.

Other than that its a bit heavier, but thinner than the G21. Recoil is nothing...could have blasted with it all day. Does fit the same holsters pretty good.....no need to buy new holsters if you own a 21.

Funny thing about the sticks of MA (west of like idk, Framingham), holy shit you guys pay a lot for ammo and firearms. 2 shops and I couldn't find a decent price on ANYTHING. I no longer take Four Seasons/Collectors for granted. Free market is awesome, but man did I see high prices.[/QU

I know to some of you guys your world ends at 495, but us unwashed toothless rednecks generally dont wait in line for guns, dont ever have to take a number for service, or get on some dumb waiting list, and when we ask the dealer to knock it down to four seasons prices they usually do.

What does this mean?

Cast vs forged barrel and slide. Plenty of info online about why one is better than the other.

I just bought a SR40, I assume it will have the same issue. Is what you described doable for someone who this is their first pistol? Or should I get a "trigger job," and of so, is that essentially just replacing the trigger mechanism? Who does that, a gunsmith?

Thanks for the help and for the great write-up!

Yea, its a cake walk. If you look around I'm sure someone on YouTube has already made a video on how to take out the striker and what to polish.

Had to send my SR45 to Ruger for repair. Upper Camblock Pin came loose and fell out. I noticed in other forums this is a common occurrence with other SR models. This happen with anyone else?

Thread revival.

I just got home from letting some fire out of mine. First shot hit the target holder, 5.5 inches high. That hurt my pride. Second shot landed right next to it, as did the next 8 rounds. Mag #2 did the same and I killed the target holder. Hmm, methinks maybe the sight needs to be lowered.

Mag number 3 I concentrated like a mother****er on doing everything just right and I got another nice group at the top of the target. The next few mags I held low and it grouped right smack dab in the center. Next time I'll bring the right screw driver and dial it in. ****ing A is it a nice shooter.

Now for the bad(ish) part. I had a few misfires with my handloads. The primer strikes looked solid and most went bang when I put them back in the mag. I'm blaming this on the Tula primers, even though my SR9c doesn't have a problem with them.

The other oddity I saw was that the slide would close automatically when I slammed in a full mag (or even a partially full mag). It wouldn't do it on an empty mag or if I banged it with no mag, or if I gently inserted a loaded mag.

Other that the few misfires it ran flawlessly and never once balked at the cheap steel ammo I ran through it.

I'll order some Talon grips after Christmas, run a few hundred more rounds through it and it just might find itself living next to the bed.

All I have to add to this thread is people keep saying the SR45 is too big to CC. Not so. There are plenty of holster options, right now mine is residing in a Crossbreed designed for my P345, fits nicely. I have small of the back and belly band holsters. With just a loose polo shirt I am having no trouble concealing because it is so darn thin. Just need a good gun belt. Kind of nice having 11 rounds of .45 ready to go. And my trigger was pretty smooth right out of the box.

My SR45 has had Federal, PMC, and Winchester ammo run thru it with no issues.

The 3 extra magazines also worked flawlessly.

After about 6 months and 500 rounds the trigger issues have pretty much worked them self out without any aftermarket parts, as with most ruger SR the more you shoot the better the trigger gets. Gun is very reliable.

I carry this gun iwb with few issues. Sometimes owb with a sweatshirt. Never a prob.

Lots of semi-auto pistols do that. It won't do it on an empty mag because the mag follower would be pushing up on the slide catch/lock. Just like it would if you were shooting it and the mag went empty. The mag follower then engages the slide lock and locks the slide back...

This. My SR9c + Glocks do this when I slam it, but not when you do it gently. They like the abuse. My XDs has done it once or twice.
