My SKS is in pieces -- what parts do I need?

Hello,

I am unfamiliar with the SKS platform, and I figured that there might be some experts here who can help me.

I have an old Chinese SKS. All the numbers seem to match -- for the parts that I have. These include:

-Receiver with barrel and bolt
-Trigger Group
-2 fixed magazines (1 5 round, 1 10 round)??
-Gas tube
-Plastic Monte carlo(?) stock
-Plastic handguard piece
-An aftermarket williams peep sight, with the regular sight removed. Don't know if this is a good sight or not.

See the attached picture, and I can take more pictures if that would help.

So my question is -- what am I missing, and where can I find it? It would be nice to restore this gun to somewhat original form, including at least a bayonet and maybe a wood stock. But at a bare minimum, I would like to know what basic parts are needed to get this firing again.

The stock isn't original.

here's my 1955 Russian SKS, my Norinco Chinese one is essentially the same, but not as nice.

Great gun!

Agree with above, not an original stock and you are missing a few things from what I can see.

Great site for MilSurp...go here...Collecting and Shooting the SKS Carbine - HISTORY...view the assembly/dissassembly and other links.

Get your Curio & Relics License...you can order these things through the mail direct to your house!!!!

Good luck!

It's not visible in your photo, but if the gas piston is not tucked inside your gas tube, then you'll need that. Same thing with the operating rod and spring - it's probably inside the rear sight block, but we can't see it. The gas tube retention lever holds it in - be careful if you decide to flip that lever forward, it can really launch.

If you want to replace that monte carlo stock with a more authentic wooden one, they can be had fairly cheaply on ebay. There are other places that sell them as well, like this guy:

David's Collectibles SKS Stocks

The bayonet shouldn't be hard to find either.

Good luck.

Yes, I am definately missing the gas piston, extension, and spring. And some clips...

Thank you everyone who responded... I will be getting the piston parts, and I will keep an eye out for a stock and bayonet. I suppose I will need a correct sight too if I am going to restore this to stock condition too.

Where can I find cheap parts of a Norinco SKS? I was thinking about buying a barreled action and throwing one together. Or am i better off getting one of those type 26 for 350 or so?

You should check out youtube. There are a ton of great guides for assembly on these bad boys. Most of them involve the installation of a third party stock system but it should give you all you need.
