I am looking into purchasing a 1919. I was going to purchase one last year but put it off until now. The sole purpose of this rifle will be to allow my students to shoot it during class. Here are my questions...

Where is the best place to buy one? How much should I expect to pay?

Should I build one from a kit? How much will I save?

What caliber should I get? 8mm, 30-06, .308? (cost and availability of ammo is important)

Will I have to use pre-ban links? Where do I buy them?

Thanks for the help...

If you go to www.1919a4.com they have lots of info about 1919s. 30-06 would be the way to go right now as it is the cheapest surplus. Most of the 8mm has dried up along with cheap .308. The price of a 1919 is about $1000-1500 depending on where you get them. There are no date codes on links and I would think that they all would be pre-ban, because they haven't used the 1919 in the armed forses in a long time. Building vs buying, in builded it sould cost around $800 to complet your gun. $400 for the kit, $125 for the side plate, couple hundred for machining the internals and $125 or so for the trigger and sear, $40 for the rivits. Bunying one it should come with a warrenty if somthing happens. But visit the 1919a4 site and you will fine good info on them
