hey folks, i need a new shotgun. I mostly bird hunt and i do some target shooting for fun. right now i have 12ga pump and a 20ga pump. They are really nice and it was passed on from my dad, gramp but it feels like i want a semi and have a shorter gun.

I'm looking to buy a semi with a nice red/green sight and maybe it'd be nice if it was camo aswell. I'd really like to have a short barrel since i'm such a small person and i'm around bushes, waters quite often with my uncle and his dogs. I honestly dont really want to spend too much since i'm already getting myself a S&W mp .45 tomorrow. I went to a local gun shop and looked over some of their shotguns, i wasnt really interested in their selections. I might go into few other shops sometime over the weeks.

I was hoping maybe you guys can help me out here, thanks alot in advance.

PS: Also keep in mind, i'd really love to have a short gun but able to shoot at variety of distances because sometime we end up in bad spots and have to shoot quite far. [frown] but if it's a tad bit long but a mad nice gun for a good price then i think i'll be able to mangle around with it.

The Remington 1100 is a good deal as used guns can be had for a reasonable price. The barrels are easily changed so you can set it up for several types of shooting.

Couldn't agree more - nice gun, nice price, adaptable. I understand the Mossy semi-autos are nice as well. I have no experience with them, but have handled them at DSG and they even come all camoed up...[wink]

Remmy's nice, but Mossberg's a very solid piece of equipment (if not the prettiest). And they're a great value. Mossberg's got a very versatile lineup, and any dealer should be order whichever one you'd want. I prefer their pump action, for lighter weight and simplicity.

Used or new? My best advice would be to look around for a used Beretta 390 or a Rem 1100. Both can be bought pretty reasonably and you can get different length barrels at a later date.

The Dick's Sporting Goods store in Danvers, MA has a brand new Beretta Extrema2 for sale for at least half off. It comes with a rifled barrel, but for that price you could pick up a smoothbore barrel for a few extra hundred and have a great 12 gauge package that you could use for anything and everything.

Please buy it as every time I go to pick up ammo I'm tempted to get it myself.

dude.... im liking that berreta xtrema2 and it seems like it'd be perfect for me on bird hunt. but... the cost o.0!!!!!! i was leaning somewhere around 500ish,i honestly dont have 1k to throw down and if i did i would do it.

Save for the Beretta. I have a 391 (similar model to the Xtrema but doesn't take 3.5" shells) and it is a damned nice gun. Blows Mossbergs/Remingtons out of the water.

just got the mp .45 today w00t. now saving up for a new shotgun... unsure if it'll be the extrema because of the price tag on it.

vellnueve,

I think the Xtrema at Dick's was around $600-$700 brand new. An additional ~$300 gets you a smoothbore barrel. For about 1k and change you can walk out the door with a semi-auto 12 gauge that will last you the rest of your life.

Why not look at a pump? They're a lot easier to strip, cheaper and the advantage of a fast cycle really doesn't mean much if you're limited to one in the chamber and two in the mag anyway. If you don't want to save for the Beretta, take a good hard look at the Benelli Nova/Supernova pump. I think they're nicer than what Ithaca, Remington and Mossberg offer.

Well, I already have a 391 Urika, and it's a hell of a nice gun (cost me $670 back when I got it, when they had just come out, because my dad still had his 01FFL at that time), so the Xtrema would probably be a bit redundant. Does Dick's sell extra barrels? I was about five seconds away from pulling the trigger on one of their Mossberg Field/Deer combos but decided to just find a cantilever barrel for my 391 instead.

Charles Daly, H&R, and Stoeger make some sub$500 auto shotguns that I have no experience with but have heard from people who like them and people who don't. S&W and weatherby also have a few offerings around $500 that, again, I don't own and/or have never fielded. You may want to try out something from one of those guys before you <ahem> shoot your wad(pun obviously intended [smile].)
You'll hear good and bad about every model from every manufacturer. Doesn't matter if it's $150 or $15,000. That being said...

Personally, my money has consistently found its way into remington's pockets. Or, the pockets of used remy owners. My pumps and autos have stood up to all the abuse I could dish out. 1187 sportsman models are rock solid. Used 1100 and 1187 can be found in different configs and conditions for under $500.Tons of after market components are readily available too.
The mossbergs are solid as well. The new ones I've seen have all had ported barrels which I'm not too fond of but they stand up to everything and won't drain your wallet.
I'm also a huge fan of Benelli, Beretta, and browning autos for hunting and clays but they'll be hard to find for $500'ish.

BTW, hi viz makes good add-on sights if you find a shotgun you like that doesn't have a fiber optic(red/green) sight.
When you say you want a short gun do you mean barrel, overall, length of pull? If overall length of the gun is an issue any of the turkey configs can work well all-around and will have a shorter barrel.

Hope you're enjoying the M&P.

thanks guys! i'll go around looking into those and study a bit. ephemeratta, same here i dont always follow who ever says it's good or bad. i keep an open minded and try them out before buying (if possible can shoot them). About the shorter gun i ment is the overall length which is the stock and barrel. I'm a short guy and both of my shotgun is quite long and hard on me altho i can still handle it. I just wanted to make it more pleasureful for me by having a "better" shotgun as in semi auto along with shorter length.

i'm actually eyeballing the beretta ones but the price tags is scaring me. i actually have to us the $ for college but i'm so addicted to hunting and having another firearm into my house hehe. i think i'll wait till next year before i get a new shot gun because school is coming up, plus the bird season is coming soon, i relized i needed new gears since i outgrown them. :( But but, i'm keeping my eyes open :)

hey i was just in a local sporting goods. seems like they got a few camo semi shot guns.

here's a few what ya think?

mossberg 935 12ga. for 595$

stoger s2000 (something like that i think) for 430$

there was a browning for 1k i was like ouch. other than that those two i could get now but idk much about them. any one got comments about it or got better suggestions for me still? Keep in mind i want something i can spend a good deal on and has low recoil. I wouldnt mind getting the beretta extrema2 but it costs me an arm at the moment.

The Beretta is only $100 or so more than the Mossberg, and if you buy it during tax free day, you'll save a decent amount. Check out that Dick's mentioned earlier, that's a great deal for any Beretta.

dicks dont have em stock. i'm up in augusta, maine

i'm looking at the beretta extrema2 price tag right now from gunbrooker and few other places. most of them are easily 1300.... Show me how you can get a beretta extrema for close 700 like you claim that it is. What day is the tax free? i never seen or herd about tax free... but i know about black fridays or monday after thanksgiving. But that's kinda late :(

Oh, you're in Maine.

Check out KTP, it's not too far from you, maybe an hour or two drive. They've got more shotguns than anyone else I've ever seen.

Dick's that stock them usually have sales on each of their guns every other week.

Here's a nice one at Kittery. It's a Beretta AL390 which is the model that preceded the 391, but it's a helluva nice shotgun anyway.

Also, check your local Walmarts, some of them have AL390s in stock. I know the one in Bangor had them.
