I want to remove the right side of the ambi safety on my S&W PC1911. I've been looking for a plug for it but can't find one. Does such a thing exist?

I'm guessing the hole where the right side inserts and locks in to the left. Just buy a single sided safety, dude. Heck, I might even have one to send ya in my parts box.

Yes I want to remove the lever from the right side. I thought there were plugs for this. It's for a performance center 1911. If I replace it with a single sided safety what holds the lever in? Wouldn't it just be a plug on the right side which is what I'm looking for? This is my only 1911 so I can't compare with anything.

Since it's a PC I want to keep it as original as possible. If I can't buy a right side with no lever then I'll just leave it alone. I thought that was a common part. With the ambi safety the two sides connect inside the frame and help hold things together.

It's pretty easy and cheap to fit a new STI single sided safety. Just drop in the original one if you want to go back. You won't find a "plug" for the right side.

1911 single-sided safeties are a very common part. Look to Brownells for many options; you'll find at least one that will look correct on your model.

It's the "plug" I figured would be common. The rod on the right lever that goes into the hole in the frame has a notch in the end. I guess I'll call that the female end. The rod on the left lever has a male end that fits into the notch of the right lever. They snap together creating a single rod that pivots. I thought I could remove the right lever and replace it with something with no lever .a.k.a. a plug. I guess not. I'll try to find a replacement single sided lever. Thanks.

Something similar to this is what I was thinking...

Whichever brand you buy, you can expect it to be a little oversize and to require a little bit of file and stone work to achieve a perfect fit to your pistol. You can take the job to a 'gunsmith' if you want, or ship it to S&W's Performance Centre (or to another 1911 shop), or Brownells will sell you the shop manual(s) (like Kuhnhausen's) and all of the tools you'll need to D-I-Y. (If you do that, just use the shop manuals and the pistol's OEM safety as a guide, reassemble often - again and again and again and again - to re-check function, and GO SLOW.)

If a plug existed there would be nothing to hold it in place unless it was pressed into the frame. A standard safety's shaft extends all the way to the opposite side of the frame.

Buy a safety that matches the original if that matters and fit it. It's not difficult.

Fitting a 1911 safety is easy - IF you know what you are doing. If you don't get proper instruction (in person or a good manual), you run the risk of taking off just a bit too much metal, or metal in the wrong location, and ruining the safety.

It's a job for a file (use one with a flat safety edge), not a dremel.
