I can't get all three on the grip either (my pinky grips the bottom of the mag). But with 9mm it is not much of a problem as the recoil isn't too bad. The only problem with 9mm right now is that it is hard to find at wally worlds awesome prices. I always see 40 at wally world. If your not sure on the recoil of the XD sub in 40, Manchester firing line may have one that your could rent to see if you like it.
If I had the money, I would be buying a P99 in 9mm as I love the grip. My dad has a full size P99 with a crossbreed supertuck holster and you can't tell he is carrying unless he bends over or crouches.
Take a look a Kahrs. Very well built carry guns. I have nothing but positive things to say about my mk9.
Get yourself an M&P9 and be done with it. Between both mags you will have 34 rounds on board. The pistol is dead reliable, dead simple, and extremely ergonomic. It simply outclasses anything SIG makes.

I have a full size MA compliant M&P40, so I'd be looking to go a different route.
SemiAutoSam suggests the Sig 229. Great pistol! I have the Sig 226 and 239 in 9mm and love them both.
With the Sig 226 it is about 10% larger than the 229, but you can get flush mounted mags that hold 18 rounds of 9mm. Add a set of Hogue finger grips and it is a joy to shoot. The Sig 239 is smaller and lighter, but also more concealable if that is a concern in your new, lighter Florida apparel.
I really want to check out a Kahr MK9. The all stainless looks awesome. It is small and I've read great reviews.
Congrats on your new found freedoms!!!
If you don't have an M&P40c, then there's the obvious choice.
Also, if you don't have a J frame, consider that too. I would pass on Ruger's LCR.
I think a PPS .40 would be a great Florida carry gun. Held one at KTP last night and man was it thin.
HK45
I don't want another M&P, I already have one! haha
I'm gonna go to the range and put some lead through some of these choices and see what happens.
You need a revolver.
On the other hand, the M&P45c is a hell of a gun in a nice, compact package.
