Consider a Sig Sauer P229 in 40SW.

I have 3 or 4 of them.

The best pistol I ever owned.

This isnt the P229 in 40SW but it does show the beauty of the Sig pistols.

This one is one of my Sig P229 in 9mm sporting a 20 round mag.

I voted for the XD. I have the XD9 sub compact and I love it. The recoil would be more pronounced with the 40 though. My dad has the P99 and I love the grip on it, so look at that one as well.

I can't get all three on the grip either (my pinky grips the bottom of the mag). But with 9mm it is not much of a problem as the recoil isn't too bad. The only problem with 9mm right now is that it is hard to find at wally worlds awesome prices. I always see 40 at wally world. If your not sure on the recoil of the XD sub in 40, Manchester firing line may have one that your could rent to see if you like it.

If I had the money, I would be buying a P99 in 9mm as I love the grip. My dad has a full size P99 with a crossbreed supertuck holster and you can't tell he is carrying unless he bends over or crouches.

I'm actually in Florida right now, so MFL is a bit out of driving range, haha. One of the ranges down the street most likely has one I can try out before I buy.

Take a look a Kahrs. Very well built carry guns. I have nothing but positive things to say about my mk9.

Looking now! Thanks.

Get yourself an M&P9 and be done with it. Between both mags you will have 34 rounds on board. The pistol is dead reliable, dead simple, and extremely ergonomic. It simply outclasses anything SIG makes.

Yet somehow, my M&P9 wasn't reliable and, for me at least, was significantly less accurate than my P229. The 229 has been very accurate, extremely reliable and fits my hand perfectly.

I suggest he tries both and buys the one he likes.

Actually, for a carry gun, I concur on the Kahr recommendation.

I've owned a G30 SF, and it was a excellent pistol. I would of kept it if I didn't need the money!

It's small, holds 10 rounds and is easy to control. If you can get your hands on this or its 10mm brother, go for it! You wont be disappointed!

I have a full size MA compliant M&P40, so I'd be looking to go a different route.

If you don't have an M&P40c, then there's the obvious choice.

Also, if you don't have a J frame, consider that too. I would pass on Ruger's LCR.

SemiAutoSam suggests the Sig 229. Great pistol! I have the Sig 226 and 239 in 9mm and love them both.

With the Sig 226 it is about 10% larger than the 229, but you can get flush mounted mags that hold 18 rounds of 9mm. Add a set of Hogue finger grips and it is a joy to shoot. The Sig 239 is smaller and lighter, but also more concealable if that is a concern in your new, lighter Florida apparel.

I really want to check out a Kahr MK9. The all stainless looks awesome. It is small and I've read great reviews.

Congrats on your new found freedoms!!!

The Mk9 is very nice. However, for pocket carry, the PM9 is a bit better due to weight.

I don't want another M&P, I already have one! haha

I'm gonna go to the range and put some lead through some of these choices and see what happens.

try the ruger 345.....picked up a new one 3 wks ago and it worked flawlessly with all types of ammo including hollow points and the sights are right on at about 18 or 20 yards or so ( problably more accurate than me lol).
