I’m having some trouble with a Challenger II I picked up the other day.

When I shoot standard velocity ammo (CMP Aguilla) I have feeding problems; the first round won’t feed when I drop the slide (it gets stuck at an angle halfway out of the chamber). Instead of sliding into the chamber, the lead nose of the bullet wedges itself right into the top edge of the chamber.

And if it happens to chamber, or I clear it and feed the first round manually, the following rounds consistently double feed.

I noticed that when the first round was jamming, the firing pin would be sticking out of the side and resting on the round, and could have contributed to the jam. I’ve never seen a firing pin stick out like that. If I lock the slide back and shake the gun, the firing pin pops right out. Is this normal???

However, when I shoot high velocity ammo (Federal Value Pack, copper coated bullet), the gun functions much better; I only have the occasional failures to eject or double feed.

But when I shoot hyper velocity ammo (CCI Stingers, copper bullet) the slide locks back after every single shot.

And when I shoot subsonic ammo (Remington subsonic, looks to be a coated lead bullet) it functions almost flawlessly.

So what’s going on here, guys? Am I having a problem with my magazine, or is the gun just REALLY ammo sensitive?

Thanks!

The Browning Challenger II was know for having a problem like that if it wasn't put together right after it was cleaned.

I would take it apart and clean it again and make sure the barrel mounting screw is tight when you put it to back together.
