I just bought a Remington 870 Super Mag. I want to get a shorter barrel for home defense.

Didn't think it'll be so hard to just find a shorter smooth bore barrel into it... until I started asking around. I looked up Remington's site and it clearly says that 870 Super Mags can have a shorter barrel that is not 3.5" capable. It'll be fine as long as you only use 3" shells in it. So I went to Cabela and the two guys there confused the crap out of me. They said that I can only put a riffled barrel on it and that it needs to be a 3.5".

Does anyone here knows whether I can use a smooth bore barrel 18" or 18.5" on the 870 Super Mag? I don't want to use a riffled barrel for home defense. Unless there's nothing wrong with using a riffled barrel for home protection (I am all ears on this one)

Thoughts? Opinions? All welcomed!

I usually buy my barrels from Brownells. From the Remington Website: "Model 870 Super Magnum barrels chambered for 3 1/2" shells cannot be used on non-Super Magnum Model 870 receivers. However, Model 870 magnum barrels with 3-inch chambers can be used on Model 870 Super Magnum receivers, but only with 2 3/4 or 3-inch shells. Super Magnum receivers have serial numbers that end with the letter "A"

just pick out the magnum barrel you want and go to town from the looks.

The guy at cabellas is dumb

You got that right.
Cabela's offered me a job at their gun counter. I was all excited until we got to the part about salary. The job pays $11 per hour. How smart can the guy possibly be, if He's willing to work full time for $11.

I did check out the website and I got me a barrel from one of the members here at NES. I'm pretty excited. I think it'll work just fine. I did contact Remington just to check but have not heard from them yet. Oh well.

It is sad to hear that they do not seek out true professionals that know their stuff. I'm sure that these guys will learn as they go, but till then...
