Hello All!
My new Stag AR15 model 3 should be in this week and I was curious about what advise I could get from this forum. I want to get an inexpensive under $200 scope to shoot accurately out to at least 2oo yards and a spotting scope to eyeball my groupings at the same distance. Please let me know what you think. Thank you in advance for your opinions.

I think you may want to look at expanding your budget... The last thing you want to do is waste the money on something you will be looking to replace with in a year. I put a super sniper on mine and I like it a lot. Spotting scopes can be just as expensive if not more then the optic itself.

+1

I got a cheap scope for my MP15-22 trying to be cheap. I think I spent about $100 and the piece of crap couldn't hold a zero with a wheelbarrow full of c clamps. It was a bad buy. Spend the $200 on a good set of iron sights or save for a scope if you only want to go optics.

a cheap variable 20-60x spoting scope will let you spot your hit on 200 yards. I'm using a Barska. It's cheap, but functional for me @ 200 yards.

As for rifle scopes, I won't go cheap. Try spend a few more bucks and get a good scope. You need a better scope to handle the recoil from your rifle. Get a good scope mount too.

got call from 4seasons last week, model 3 was back in on friday.
I am going to pick up mine today.

I am looking for scope too.
how to tell if the scope and mount are good? go for big names??

Check reviews online, if your buying from certain manufacturers your assured a pretty good product but at a cost.
All I can say is research it. Post on here for users experience if you find one or cross reference using search to see if any feedback comes back.

+1 for the Barska spotting scope. For the money it does the job out to about 300 yards. I paid around $150 for mine.

Like one of the above posters I also have a super sniper on my savage .308. It is a hard scope to beat for the price. I went 16x but the 10x is a great all around piece of glass as well

I really do not have a lot of experience with scopes and rings. I actually have the 4 or 5 original scopes I purchased along the way, but...
I purchased this to go on my flat top http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=30 bit pricey but works. I was tired of shifting rings and cheap shit mounts. I used it with my trusty old model Leopould VX-III which works well for me @ 100 yards. I tried some higher end scopes and such but find myself selling them off and going back to irons ???
spotting scopes, I got mine on sale @ optics planet for 59.95 free shipping its ok. fussy and takes a while to figure out the best zoom for the distance. It wont focus for sheet on 60x @ 100 yards I actually use the 25x and get the clearest picture

I have a high quality spotting scope (25X Kowa) and unless you are using high visibility targets, it is nearly impossible to see bullet holes at anything past 250 yards or so.

Cheapo spotters, with their hazy, poor quality optics, will do even worse. And if you think upping the magnification is the cure, you need to understand how scopes work. Then you'll realize that increasing the magnification just amplifies the light transmission loss through the lenses and your image just gets darker.

Buy what you will, but optical equipment is still one of the areas where the old adage of "you get what you pay for" still applies in spades.

+1 on what Jose said. i have a cheap 25-125x spotter, and i have trouble seeing holes at 200, especially with black-bull targets.

buy a quality scope and mount, and get exercise checking targets til you can rebudget for a quality spotter.

If it is in your budget go Luepold. Otherwise I have a 2-7x Nikon Pro Staff on my rifle now. I find it easy to work with at 100yds but have not done much with it past that. It picks up light well and holds zero. But it is no Luepold.

As for a mount my next purchase is a Quick Release P.E.P.R. mount.

You can pick up a 10x Super Sniper scope for $300. (don't go with one of the higher magnification as the position of your eye gets very picky and the view is darker.)

Plenty of reviews around: Link

Good scope for the money. Won't have the low light performance of a high end NightForce or Leupold, but in just about every other condition, it is VERY close.

Sadly, you'll need to add a good mount too. The best scope in the world will suck if it can't be held steady.
