First and foremost I will introduce myself I am Nick from Maine and I am 24 years old. Looking to start hunting deer and maybe coyotes, so I am looking for a gun. I am signed up for the hunters safety course this week but I will need a gun. I am torn between rifles caliber wise It’ll be 30-06 or a .308. Gun wise I am torn between an H and R handi rifle A fellow at work swears by them and I took a look at his and it seemed like a quality piece. My other choice is a Savage Axis, which a friend of mine has and I will have a chance to shoot in the near future. Price wise they are about the same and both are within what I want to spend. I don’t want to spend a lot in case I realize hunting is not for me. I guess my question is this for the money which of these is the highest quality, best bang for my buck? I know single shot vs. a bolt is a big difference but that aside based on quality alone which is the better purchase?

I wouldn't go with a Mosin Nagant as a starting hunting rifle. Although it may be cheap, finding good quality hunting ammo and zeroing the rifle would be much more difficult for a new shooter. It's also too long and a little unwieldy as a hunting rifle.

Try something like a Remington Model 770 - should be able to find one for about $300 new from any local big box store and it's pretty much ready to go.
