I'm am putting in my LTC application in a few days. A few of my friends have them and carry daily. My only thing is I am having a hard time finding a decent handgun at a lower price. Most I am seeing are 400-500.
I really like the Smith & Wesson MP40.
I have also been told that the Ruger SR series is a good gun.
What does anyone recommend.

Ask one of your friends to take you to a range that has firearms you can rent. Try a few and see what you like. Maybe a shield in 9mm or a glock, ruger....there are many great options. Good for you getting your LTC.

Going green?
And I thought about the rental ranges but I don't know of any or the prices for those. Not a big Glock fan.
Thanks snowballs

If its your first gun, M&P 9mm will be great for you. Ammo is abundant and cheap. I personally am a fan of Glock pistols although they are getting harder to find. The 40 caliber is good but it has more recoil and cost more to shoot. There are tons of threads here on this topic. Give them a read and learn lots.

Good luck and welcome to the world of CCW and NES

Don't discount older generation guns. My daily Cary is a Smith and Wesson 4013tsw great gun and the grip fits my hand great. Also have a 3913 and a 59-2 great guns and not very expensive these days.

I do recommend trying as many guns as you can. Even holster some of your friends gear.

Also don't think you need a semi auto ......in the recent heat my old SW hamerless 38 snubby is a great carry piece for minimal clothing

Get your friend's to let you test guns. It also depends on what you are looking for. I have many but my 2 go to carry guns are shield 9mm. Great for holster carry but if I dont feel like strapping on the holster. Love my 640 pd for pocket carry. If you are in the process of applying you have plenty of time before the license arrives get out ans do some shooting

See if any of your friends are members at MFS. MFS members get free guests and their guests get free access to their armory. Otherwise, they and the other for-profit ranges have plenty you can rent at a nominal fee.

Where is mfs and what is it?

MFS is the acronym for Massachusetts Firearms School. They are a for-profit range with an attached store, and they also provide classes. They are located in Holliston. There are a few others I'm told are similar, but I'm not personally familiar with them. http://www.massfirearmsschool.com/

Why do I suddenly feel like a shill?
I just didn't know what it was. I live in Athol. So that is a bit of a drive

Go shoot every kind of gun you can. Find what's best. Also find Google.com and give it a whirl, it's pretty neat what you can do with it ;-)
I know what Google is. I thought it was a regular gun club. The ones in my local are don't pop up with acronyms.

Massachusetts officials learn the AR-15 features

Please long known before ........ do you really think we are holding any secrets.. it's just a matter of time before our enemy decides to act on their ideas.
Do you think "high capacity ammunition " was tossed around so much because they are stupid.
Watch for the new definitions on ammo slowly creep in. They tried with the 5.56 M855 ammo

Believe me the media and the politicians are just like LEO ...... anything you say or do will be used against you.... i

And they'll even go on channel 5 to let the AG know how the AWB is a joke just for cosmetics...... don't go to MFS

Dont forget you are also going to wear this on your hip all day. I would suggest something slim and compact. I would love to carry a hand cannon if I could, but its just not comfortable. Good luck and join a local club. I cant count the number of different guns I shot after joining my local club and its a great way to find out what you like. Oh yah, be SAFE!

Others have said this for 18 years....yes MFS said it but believe me "they" knew already.
Just the fact that MFS even invested in a gun business here in MA is credit due.

I hate to say this but as much as I was surprised at how many shops opened up here in mass in the past 5 years .....I think we will see more close in the next 1-2 years.
It's not because of the loss of the sales to the so called AWs they will just be sick of dealing with MA period.

This your carry choices are also dictated by what you wear. My buddy is in suit and tie or sport jacket often. He's got a old school leather holster and carries out side waist often.
He also has one jacket that the holster is built into the jacket....cross draw ... think shoulder holster rig but built into his sport coat. His dad gave it to him years ago and it's pretty cool.

M&P 40 was my first gun. While its a great reliable gun (needs trigger job though), I quickly realized I should have bought it in 9mm due to cost.

come on now you know you realized 40 sucks [smile]
my common carry is 40.... although purchasing had nothing to do with the cal. the particular gun just works for me. The quickest I can draw that 4013 it comes out pointing in the right direction. The 1911 and other similar thin grip designs if I draw quickly the grip sits in my palm in such a way it cants off to the left. Slow precise draw I can get a better grip on the pistol.... my hands are not that big and I prefer a larger fatter grip.
