I just got me a new M&P 10. Nice rifle with the only exception is that the version sold here is the "complaint" one. No muzzle brake and fixed stock. I found the stock to be short for me so I am already looking to replace it. The gun comes with no sights installed so a pair of folding ones was on order. It shoots well and a lot of fun. Just a bit short in the wow factor due to the neutered features. Got it at Sportsman's den in Quincy. [smile]

Anyone here has one? Anyone has replaced the stock? if so, I'd be interesting in reading about your experience as I prepare to budget my customization

thanks

Replacing to stock is a cinch. Buy a wrench for the castle nut and put on whatever you want. If it's like the M&P 15's you'll want to replace the buffer tube and of course the new stock needs to be pinned (if adjustable) to please Mrs. Coakley.

Stocks are an easy thing to fix, castle wrench, new tube, and stock. Not sure what you had in mind for a stock but the Vltor Emod is very nice, the stock is a little longer and than normal and has a great cheek weld, so it may suit you well if the existing one is to short. If you wanted to put on a break of some sort to manage recoil, you'd need to get the barrel threaded, and then have it pinned once it's installed. Not sure who does that around here. I usually buy an unmolested AR's online, then have the FFL i transfer through do the molesting before i pick up. Good luck with it.

Thanks all for the replies. I am considering the magpul PRS stock. It seems bulky enough and the correct lenght. Ihave been reading and it appears that S&W has some funky business requiring some spacer if a rifle lenght buffer tube is used. Anyways no biggie, it does not seem to be that big of a job. Thanks again.

Be careful, the buffer tube & spring on the M&P 10 are proprietary and not a universal length. The easiest way to switch stock is to keep the current buffer tube & you can throw any mill spec stock onto said tube. If you're looking to switch to an A2/rifle length tube you must get a spacer from Smith & Wesson, just call customer service #.

Does S&W use an adjustable tube (with the notches for the stock to lock into as it slides on the tube) on the M&P10 or the phony adjustable tube like on the M&P15's without the notches?

If it doesn't have the notches you'll need a free state tube from S&W then.

I have the "compliant" version also, and was looking to change out the stock. I contacted S&W customer support (800-331-0852) and ordered the spacer so I could use a rifle length A2 buttstock with the provided buffer tube. As stated above, I was told that the Receiver Extension (Buffer tube) can not be swaped with a standard Mil-spec one as the M&P10 extension is proprietary and is a little longer. I have not tested this, so you are on your own to verify.

Another forum (AR15) has a vendor section for S&W, and they have tons of info on the MP10.

It does have the notches like any standard extension, so you could throw any adjustable mil spec on it if you were housing the rifle outside the confines of MA. I flipped to a fixed rifle length so I had to swap tubes anyway.

I own an AR-10 and was looking to get a second 762/308 rifle, well, just because. I was thinking either M&P 10 or a DPMS...update the thread to let us know how the thing work out for you + all you pros/cons love/hates...never can hear enough first hand experience. Good luck with it.

The Smith comes with a 7 1/2" buffer tube. If you go with a standard AR length buffer tube you need to get a new (shorter) buffer and spring rated for .308. I put the UBR (pinned) on mine and got a new buffer and spring. Magpul has a recommended buffer and spring for their stocks for use with .308, that's where I got mine and it works just fine.
