Next week I will be buying my first gun and I'm still at odds over what to get. I know I want a Ruger mkii or mkiii, but I also want a new/like-new gun. Would it be difficult to find a new Ruger mkii around here or are the mkiiis dominating the market? I kind of want a mkii over the mkiii because its simpler, but if I can't find a good looking one then I'll have to settle for a mkiii.

Whichever model I end up getting i want the 22/45 grip angle and a stainless 5.5" bull barrel. Aside from Four Seasons, are there any stores you guys recommend going to for good service, variety and prices? Maybe some shops on the south shore near Walpole?

I could be wrong but I don't think they made a MKII 22/45.

There are many threads and info here about the proper way to field strip the MKIII, so don't be scared! Just get the 22/45.

Don't be scared of MKIII takedown. If you are even slightly mechanically inclined and can and will follow written instructions, its really not very difficult. Not to mention mine seems to run better a bit dirty and runs flawlessly with over 5K rounds since I last broke it down fully.

Theres also tons of info on this forum which has a forum for each different type of MK ruger:

I believe 45collector is correct, the 22/45 was not released during the MKII series --> they're only found in the MKIII series.

That being said, I like the standard MKII or MKIII much better than the 22/45. I suppose it's personal preference (there's no difference in performance), but the polymer frame feels cheap to me and doesn't inspire confidence.

As for price, I doubt anyone will beat Four Seasons in price for a new model. If buying used, keep an eye on the classifieds here you'll find yourself a deal if you have enough patience.

I bought mine (5.5" bbl mkIII target in blue) from Blue Northern in Ayer, because they were close to me and because they actually had the gun I wanted.

I think Blue Northern had some 22/45s, as well, I didn't look at them, just fondled the gun I bought and looked through the glass at the S&W 41 they had there.

These guns aren't hard to put together, just have a lot of steps, and if you were like me and got something slightly wrong early on, it is just a mess. Despite the volume of threads about "My #@#(* gun won't go back together," NESers are very accommodating about providing help to resolve the issue (probably because we've all been there...).

Good hunting!

They did make a Mark II 22/45. Heres the manual.

Ruger Marks are great guns. I have a Mark II Competition and I love it. If you find a stainless one sometimes you can buff out the scratches too. Keep that in mind.

I got mine at Forseasons but you also have Bass Pro in your back yard I was in there Yesterday and spoke with George re: slings. He is a great guy.

Rugers are great, one of my favorite guns to shoot. Sure kills the Walther p22, and even the smith 22 revolver I had regarding accuracy. Here is a picture of one without any mark's on it, although it is a bit dinged up.

Northeast trading had a used MKII in the case when I was there last week. They also had some new MKIII's. I wouldn't buy from Bass Pro as there prices are higher than Northeast.

Northeast trading is in N. Attleboro on rte 152 across from the Sunoco station near the registry of motor vehicles.

I have the extended magazine release for the slab-side, but I need to work it a little to take out the binding.

Here's mine... both a 22/45 and a 6 7/8" Competition slab-side.

Deals abound a plenty on Mark II's. There's nothing wrong with a III per se - I just like my guns as non lawyered up as possible...

**EDIT** Jack - that suppressed Mark II is just sublime...On my short list when I crossover to a free-state...[cheers]

I much prefer the MKIIs over the MKIIIs. Had one years ago when I was in the USMC in NC. Sold it before getting out and regretted it for years. Was finally able to pick up a LNIB one at FS for only $249.95. They are definitely out there, but may take a little looking.
