LONDON — Global health officials are closely following a new respiratory virus related to SARS that is believed to have killed at least one person in Saudi Arabia and left another person in critical condition in Britain.

The germ is a coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic.

In the latest case, British officials alerted the World Health Organization on Saturday of the new virus in a man who transferred from Qatar to be treated in London. He had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia and is now being treated in an intensive care unit after suffering kidney failure.

Health officials don't know yet whether the virus could spread as rapidly as SARS did or if it might kill as many people.

nice that his illness hasn't effected his ability to travel [rolleyes]

Crap I just came down with a cold. My kid and my wife have it too. Let's hope that this isn't the pandemic everyone says we are long overdue for.

I predict the following news reports to happen pretty soon this year:

1. Get your flu shots now! You're all gonna die!

2. There's a shortage of flu shots this year (isn't there always). Get your flu shots now!

(Ignore their fear mongering. The shots don't work and probably increase your chances of getting Alzheimer's. Besides, I don't like to do what I'm told if that someone doing the telling is the government.)

Update

Doesn't look like it's very infectious...... Wonder how they caught it....[thinking]

Health authorities are investigating a newly-discovered virus that can cause serious breathing problems. Only two people have been infected so far. The first known case, which was fatal, occurred in Saudi Arabia in July. The second was diagnosed in late September, in a man from Qatar who had been to Saudi Arabia. He is now hospitalised in serious condition in the United Kingdom. The new virus belongs to the same family as both SARS and the common cold. Officials are working to discover how the two men caught the disease. There is no sign that it spreads easily from person to person, and no clusters of illness have been identified. No one who lived with or took care of these men has become sick

New virus detected in the middle east? Can we donate to the virus via paypal so it spreads to the entirety of the middle east? If we have recurring monthly payments of 29.99, can it undergo serious metamorphosis on a weekly basis to avoid a cure? Finally darwin has taken some initiative, let's help along the process folks.
