Hey guys, I sure could use some help. Hunting skipped a generation in my family, so I never got taught this stuff. I bought an old Swedish Mauser, and so far it shoots great. I started cleaning it after the range, and the patches just will not come out clean. They keep coming out greenish-blue. I'll hit the barrel with the brush and some Hoppe's no.9, and then alternate from a wet patch to a dry patch a few times. I keep repeating and everytime it seems like it's starting to get clean, once I run the brush through it comes out green. I've gone through about 100 patches so far today! What am I doing wrong here?

I would suspect that it probably has not been cleaned thoroughly in a long time. Also Hoppes isn't all that great a cleaner.

I've had good luck with BreakFree Carbon cutter, but like most of them, you have to let the chemicals work. Maybe get it wet and leave it for an hour or so and repeat.

Thanks man. I was worried that if I let the chemicals sit too long that they'd damage the barrel. But I'll have to try it out tomorrow when I can buy some more patches and that BreakFree. I'll update how it works out.

I've read the Sweet's 7.62 (a fairly uncommon cleaner - you wont find it in a lot of shops) can cause etching if you leave it in the barrel too long. It has a lot of ammonia to remove copper fouling. I don't know if it would or not but the stuff is so frigging reactive it will really clean out a barrel in short order and no need to leave it for a long time.

Most solvents will not harm the bore, but it's best to read their instructions.

I've used a combination of Shooter's Choice Copper Remover then a couple of patches with JB Bore Paste and between the 2 barrel comes out nice and shiny

The blue/green is from copper fouling from a lot of military grade FMJ ammo. RB-17 (mail order only) is expensive, but is a gel that you can leave in the barrel for a couple of hours, and then wash out with Hoppe's (or whatever) soaked patches. A little Eezox makes a good finish.

sweets works good, but smells to no end and made me a bit ill. I been useing proshot bore cleaner recently. Works good and can be left in barrel for rust protection. I had a Garand that would not come clean for the longest time. I took a better part of a saturday and a bag of patches, proshot, foam bore cleaner. finally came clean.
I would say first is get a can of foam bore cleaner. Several brushes. I find cleaning the brushed in oderless mineral spirits helps. The brushes can hold a lot of gunk and if you dont clean them off you end up just wiping crud around.....down side now is most likly will not shoot as well with the bore squeaky clean.
