hello all,
Like to start of by saying nice site. Did a quick search and now need some advice. Bottom line new to pistols. Looking for a low cost 1911 .45 . So far best deal I found was at Cabela for a stripped Springfield armory 1911 for 600$. I figure I can do better sights later etc. My issue is the gun is made in Brazil, From what I am hearing the parts always were anyway but for the money is it a quality gun or am I better spending a few hundred more for a SW .
planning on heading over there again tomorrow. I bought the Safe tonight and am installing it before I bring a pistol into the house.
Thanks.

Since you are in CT, you have access to a wider array of choices than many of us.

I've heard very good things about the Sprinfield Armory guns and would get one myself if I could. It was recommended to me by Greg Derr as a base to build a bullseye gun from.

The other three "bargain brands" that come to mind are:
1) Rock Island Armory - do a search here. they seem well liked
2) Taurus - mixed reviews, but tend negative
3) Auto Ordnace - a few believers out there, many negative reviews.

That said, I have no experience with any of them - because they are not safe for me [thinking].

I do like my SW1911 though!

I'm very happy with my SA GI, solid gun, great shooter. Customer service was great with my questions and getting me the parts I wanted to tune for bullseye.
I'm looking at another one.

Thanks. For being a little tight on funds the SA is looking good. Hopefully get a few more posts here before I make my final decision. Just saw on the news something about another home invasion in this state. If I don't get out tomorrow and get one it will be another two weeks.

How about a S&W M&P 45? Easier manual of arms (IMHO) than a 1911. I think a 1911 needs a lot of training and practice to master. The M&P is a bit more forgiving of a novice shooter, with lower maintanance issues. I loved the M&P 45C, great gun, but the full size is nice too.

Oddly enough not knowing a whole lot about handguns I can field strip a 1911 in about 30 seconds. Also I just have this unexplainable desire to own one. I hear that is common...[smile]

Uh OH, you already have it. There is no cure, and the only treatment is 1911 range time, and be warned, they multiply....

Welcome to the forums Acesneights1. I own a Springfield Armory 1911 and I love the gun. One difference between a SA 1911 and a SW 1911 is the location of the shell extractor. You can get more information on the 1911 platform here: http://www.m1911.org/.

No matter what manufacturer you can't go wrong with a 1911 [wink]

Thanks. That is a good sight. Pretty much see that the Brazilian made model is top notch for the price range. Guess I have a winner.

I have a springfield 1911 mil-spec model the frame is stamped brazil it is a great gun I was told by somebody that the raw forging of the frame is done in brazil the frame is then shipped to U.S. for finshing

I love my SW1911.... Tack driver accurate... Did have to send it to SW for a minor issue and they test fired it for me....

One thing to consider. You can often buy a pistol with all the accessories you want from the manufacturer for a lot less than you will eventually spend for the cheaper gun and later installation of these parts. I would make a list of all the options I wanted and then find some pistols that came stock with them. Sometimes buying the cheaper pistol is false economy.

That is exactly the logic that came into play today..
Well after going there intending to spend 600$ I spent 1100$. But I think it was well spent. I don't feel like typing it all but the guy at Cabela today knew his shit about 1911s and pointed out a lot of differences from the SA 1911 I was looking at to the Kimber custom I bought but the obviuos is:
Tac rail
Longer than mil spec guide rail
Beveled eject port
Beveled where mag goes in(for quicker change)
Knurls on the front of the slide as well as back
I forgot how he explained the barrel but it was something to do with air testing or something that makes it more accurate out of the box.
and most importantly
Tritium nite sites. All in all the best 1911 for the money.
By the time I customized the SA I would have be over what I paid for the Kimber.

Just be lucky you can buy one of those I think kimber makes one of the best 1911's out there that thing would cost 1500 used here in mass

You went in looking for a Springer and came out with a Kimber.

That salesman deserves a cookie. [grin]

Congrats on your new purchase. Beauty of a gun.

Eventually you will want a vintage Colt. Like others have stated, your options are unlimited because of your location.

Shoot safe!

Congratulations, you got a lot of gun for the money, and Kimber makes one of the best. You forgot to mention the checkering on the front strap. This is the best way to get a secure grip on a 1911. It is also fairly expensive. Caspian gets $142 for this service.
