Open Guns

9mm does not make major. the weight of the bullet x the speed needs to be over 165,000. the only way you can make it with 9mm is to fill it with a lot of powder. Also the 9mm doesn't generate enough gas and pressure to really work a comp

If you use a 125gr bullet, you don't need to push the bullet as fast as a 115, but if you go up to a 147, then you don't have enough gas.

Ohh okay, I get it now, thank you!

What are the advantages of the 9mm Major over a regular 9mm or the "powder puff" loads?

You probably know this but I think what you "may" have been asking are what are the advantages to shooting 9 major over 9 minor.
The advantages are the way your scored. In other words minor is scored harsher.
To get a good score shooting minor you have to have fast runs, get more "A" shots, & not forget any targets.

heheheh!
the new 9MM wheel is also round.........or is it?[shocked]

Here is the quiz?[wink]

Who of the top 3 USPSA shooters in the country is shooting 9MM?

OK, so I have accepted that I am probably a ways away from an open gun, financially and ability. I have a bit of an off topic, opinion question for you guys.

I do have an XD in 40 I don't really shoot much anymore (1911 fan) that I am ordering a 9mm barrel for, because I have a hand full of preban beretta mags to mod. To be competitive in anything other then open, should I stick with 40 and the neutered mags, or go to 9mm with hi-caps? I am about to read the rules to see what kind of mods are allowed in the different divisions (classes?).

I really want to start shooting with you guys.

In Limited 10, the .40 will be scored Major caliber, in Production it will be Minor, regardless of caliber. Converting the .40 to 9MM is not legal for production.

Thanks for the answers.

So I guess the answer is run it in Limited 10 in .40 until I get better and start a small fund for a funner gun. From my reading of the rules, I can do mods to make it more accurate as long as I don't try to reduce recoil, are trigger jobs ok?

In L-10 go can do a lot to the gun except add a comp or red dot, and mags are limited to 140mm. So whatever you want to do is usually OK.

Production is a lot more restrictive, but allows internal trigger mod, trigger job, you can change recoil springs and sights.

The USPSA rule book has the specific rules.

Right now, Production division has some very good shooters locally. its a good place to start and progress quickly

Absolutely![shocked]
But I have all the 9x21 brass! (I think) [laugh]
these kids today would buy a Porsche or Ferrari & complain about the price of high test............... [rolleyes]

Man.. I haven't heard the term "high test" in a lonnnggg time!

I have about 10 pieces I picked up without realizing it. I should keep them in my range bag until I run in to you at a match. [rofl]

And where do you think they came from?,[wink]
Most people throw them back at me & with a few curse words..., after they load one by mistake & try to run it through their 9MM
Anyway, I get a lot back.........[laugh]

Two Comments:

1) Your ability, even as a beginner, is not a barrier to competing in open - there's no skill test or prerequisite. It's just a different variation of the game. Sure we've got some very good open shooters in the area, but there are other competitive shooters in other divisions. People choose the divisions in which they want to compete, they don't earn the right. (but yes, finances are more of an issue for aspiring open competitors.)

2) Equipment: Bring what you got and the rest will sort itself out as you go. Single stack (basic 1911) is very similar to production and is very accessible to new shooters as well. Bring a gun, holster, 5 mags with holders and your match hosts will help you figure everything else out. Do that a couple of times and something will start calling to you.

3) Don't over think this. Like Supermoto said
Grab the gear you have and go to a match.

This has been an issue with me, over think it until I do it.

I am planning on hitting a match soon, if I remember right there is a Rifle/Pistol match down on the cape in a few weeks, I am in the finishing stages of a good game rifle that I am very excited to run. If I can work the schedule to hit a practice before hand, I definitely will.

Thanks for all the input.

If you decide you want to shoot L10 with your 1911, let me know. I know a shooter with 10 round mags for sale. Nice way to make your 1911 a 2 division gun
