Police Leaders, Gun Violence Prevention Advocates to Urge Passage of Maryland Assault Rifle Ban

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Advocates of
legislation that would reduce the high incidence of assault rifle crime in
Maryland will hold a press conference at 12:30 PM Tuesday, February 27,
2007 in the Media Room of the Miller Senate Office Building, 11 Bladen
Street in Annapolis. Immediately following the press conference, the Senate
Judicial Proceedings Committee will hold a hearing on the bill.
Among those scheduled to attend the press conference are Senator
Michael Lenett; Hyattsville Police Chief Doug Holland, President of the
Maryland Chiefs Association; Captain Russell Hamill of the Montgomery
County Police; Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun
Violence in Washington DC and Lisa DeLity, President of Ceasefire Maryland
Inc.
A Ceasefire Maryland analysis published last year shows that the
assault rifles that would be prohibited under the bill Senator Lenett has
introduced are traced to crimes in Maryland on an average of once every 48
hours. The gun lobby has kept similar bills from being passed for the last
three legislative sessions.

The biggest incidence of rifle violence in MD was when the so called "sniper"
was doing his thing. The irony in that whole incident was that they also had
a bolt action rifle, but I think muhammad had dropped it somewhere when they heard sirens coming. They still could have done what they did even with a single shot rifle. (I don"t remember any of the victims being shot more than one time, IIRC. )

The MD situation is actually kinda sad... the whole state is basically at the
mercy of the crap going on/near BaltiWhore. PA is starting to suffer the
same fate but thank god that Philadelphia is mostly marginalized due to
the rest of the state standing strong on gun rights.
