Pre-Ban Olympic Arms AR15...what do you guys think??

i see all of the points everyone is making. i do want optics, don't really care if i have a flash hider or not (i'm not sniping anyone, lol) and would like to have a fixed stock and/or a slide stock anyway. so i'm leaning towards a post ban, really like the S&W M&P15FT:

throw on some optics and a bump stock...YESSA!!!!

Either way it's not a great upper. I've had a model 1 barrel (my first and only) with the front sight pinned on a serious cant and my first service rifle upper was a bushmaster with rear sights that wouldn't track....

the seller told me it is an Olympic upper, just not the original preban upper.

Seems to me if you really want evil features on the cheap (both in price and quality) get the Oly. Otherwise, save your dough and get something that will last. I suggest reading the following thread; the fact there's so much disagreement in the thread might tell you something--this coming from a guy who's happy with an RRA in 1/9, after everything I've heard in various threads, I'd stay away from the Oly. There's a saying around here--buy quality and you only cry once.

I love my M&P 15.Its a solid weapon.

I think you're over-estimating. The last pre-ban Oly lower that sold on Gunbroker went for $350, and that was with a stock and trigger group. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=251153186

(That's even too high in my opinion.)

For the record, if you followed this sale to completion you would have seen it sold for much more in the end. It was listed 4-5 times. In good shape they will bring premium prices. By the looks of the one from the OP, it's worth every penny and then some of the $800.00

well guys....i just picked up my M&P15FT, and i love it!! the trigger is lighter than i thought it would be with absolutely no free pull at all. as soon as you apply positive pressure, the pin drops. the action is flawless, no jams through the first 100 rds right out of the box. the thing was sighted perfectly. it also came with the rubber rail covers for the handguard, bolt lock w/ 2 keys, and one 10 rd mag. as for the oly....i may end up grabbing it just to resell. from what i have gathered, $800 is a good price. they have preban olympic lowers selling on gunbroker for $700 alone!! it may not be a great gun, but worth the money due to it's date of manufacture.

Great choice, you'll love the M&P, I bought the M&P15-ORC, lots of rounds through it and been flawless. I also agree, nothing to lose by picking up that Oly, plenty of options available in the future with it. I own 4 prebans, 2 complete Colt HBAR's, a PWA and a Eagle arms, I'm looking for another preban to do an SBR with, just waiting for the right price.. There is actually a pretty nice looking Essential Arms complete preban in the classified for $1300 that looks pretty nice ...

There's a sucker born every minute, sometimes it just takes a few tries to reel one in.

Anyway, congrats on the M&P. It's a far better rifle than the Oly.

thanks man, i love it!! SSAR-15 coming soon:-)

i think the lesson learned here is there's DEFINATELY a high demand for preban AR's right now. i'm sure you paid less for any that you own/owned, but they are probably worth more now. not many people want to sell prebans. i've been researching for a couple months preceeding my purchase and...i will say it again....I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY PREBAN COMPLETE GUNS OF ANY MAKE OR MODEL GO FOR LESS THAN $1000!!!! i had a guy at a shop trying to sell me an olympic preban for $999. the thing is, i really want a 380 body guard they have at my local shop so if i buy that i won't have enough to pickup the oly right now, but maybe down the line. i am confident that i could flip it for at least $100 profit.

also, for the record.....smith & wesson has 2 versions of this gun. this is the less expensive model which has magpul folding sights, slightly different hand guard, and standard hardware. the more expensive model has troy sights, slightly different handguard, & a few chrome pieces of hardware. but they are very similar, same barrel, same finish, same twist. i don't think the more expensive version is worth the extra $500. most shops will quote you the more expensive version if u ask for a quote on a M&P15FT. i had to actually show my dealer the website and request the cheaper one. he had the more expensive one in stock and even he said it wasn't worth the extra cash when they were side by side. he actually preferred my model, hahaha.
