Preferred rifle/caliber for deer & bear in Vermont

OK,

I recently posted that I have a 03A3 that I wanted to convert to a hunting rifle.
Well, the milsurps boys convinced me otherwise!
Who am I to mess with history.
I decided to recondition it to original instead.

So much for the 30-06 I planned on taking to the hills this year.

Any thought on what I should take?
I have used a model 870 on deer but I will have a bear option up in Vt and I'm not so sure about a shotgun there.

It would be a bit heavy, but you could still take the Springfield...

For anything that you will find in this part of the country, a .308 will be MORE than powerful enough to take. I opted for a Savage myself. If you take a look at the Four Seasons page, you will see they have a package deal, that comes with the rifle, sling, scope for $439.95.
