I guess I was plowed?

I have no rational explanation.

I’m no Rambo, but like most of you I can strip and reassemble an AR with my eye’s closed. Literally. Now. many of you can do this with both nuts tied behind your back and a bleeding head wound. But that’s not the point. The point is that I have stripped and reassembled this weapon a fair amount for a civilian.

So last night I was cleaning my AR and yes, I was drinking as well, but there was no live ammo in the room and I really wasn’t plowed at least I don’t remember being so.

Anyway, I’m returning the Bolt Carrier Group and Charging Handle to the Upper Receiver and for some strange reason it won’t seat smoothly. It just won’t. Now, I was sober enough not to jam it (i.e. make it fit”) but mystified nonetheless about why it wouldn’t fit.

I check the position of the Bolt Cam Pin to ensure it’s not impeding progress, I remove, reinsert, remove, reinsert a few times; Still no dice.

I put it down. I step away. I know it’s something stupid but I’m growing increasingly annoyed at both the situation and myself. Finally, I put the rifle back on the shelf and walk away for good.

I go to bed annoyed.

I don’t like unfinished projects or guns lying about in my home (yes, I am/was home and live alone) This morning I wake, walk into the living room with a fresh cup of coffee, a clearer head. and a better attitude, I pick up the BCG slide it effortlessly into the receiver, snap 2 pins, check the action and return it, fully assembled to its case.

What was the problem you ask? What nightmare of engineering did I encounter and how did I persevere?

Simple, I put the BCG in forwards instead of backwards. DOH!!!

That's not really the sort of thing you want to admit to on a public forum (I'm not talking about the backwards BCG)

I see your point and considered it, but since the firearm was clearly far from operable is there a need for it to be locked up overnight while I'm present.

Don't worry vellnueve always locks up his upper receivers when he goes to bed at night. He feels safer that way. [thinking]

Actually, back when I had two uppers and was waiting on lowers, I just left them sitting on my kitchen counter.

As for stupid mistakes, last time I went out to Harvard I was all set to use my SW1911 on some steel. Pulled out the box of ammo I brought, started loading the mags, then realized something was wrong. I use Blazer Brass .45 exclusively, but somehow I managed to pull the one box of Blazer Brass .40 in the pile that morning when I left.

I was talking about the alcohol, not the locking up.

whenever i get drunk and try to put things in backwards or in the wrong hole, i don't get to slide them in easily the next morning when i'm sober.

[rofl]! +1 for the #2 shot!

And yes, I know, Velnueve takes a special pleasure in reminding people of our overlords preferences. Of course he's just lookin' out for us don't you know...[thinking]

And as far as doing dumb things and admitting it, well, my buddies (you know who you are) can rib me about it till the cows come home. I don't mind. It's all between friends. Everyone else can go blow a goat for all I care.

BTW, Derk, Image Right Click...done[wink]

I have had this happen before - always while I re-assemble something after cleaning. I always walk away, like you did, for a few minutes come back and what do you know it fits perfectly. Makes me feel like a dumbass everytime it happens though.

BTW- Love the Dummies book Derek that is awesome!!

Right after buying our Colt HBAR my son and I decided to change to a Hogue pistol grip.

Unscrewed it, took it off, put on the new handle and screwed it back in. Simple! And we were really proud of ourselves.

That is until my son discovered the selector switch was spinning freely... oh never mind... the damn thing fell out.

I mean... c'mon... who the hell would ever put a itty bitty spring like that in a pistol grip? What kind of sick individual would design something like that?

Fortunately my son noticed the spring on the floor and the hole in the pistol grip... DOH!

:-))

+1 for having the guts to tell us all.

I shot a .40 out of a .45 .. .twice!

I once picked up my stainless Kimber .45 instead of my stainless Delta Elite. The DE magazine fit just fine into the Kimber. When I closed the slide, it chambered the 10mm round, which proceeded to fall through the barrel and land at my feet. I figured that was a clue that something was wrong and that further inspection of the gun was required.
