Hey, just got my first AR-15 and I want to get a few upgrades. Can anyone explain to me the difference between a standard drop in quad rail and a free floating quad rail and what the benefits are? Thanks in advance.

Just pick up the cheap UTG drop in quad rails and spend the rest of the money on ammo.

Free float quad rails only pay off if you are setting up for LONG range competition or varmint shooting. Most likely you dont have a 24" barrel or a 18+ power scope. So IMO save your money.

This all sounds about right. It depends on the application, but the real benefit of a free-float is long range accuracy. That said there are some very cool looking free-float rails out there so its a matter of tastes... and budget. If you are going with a drop in rail I would recommend taking a look at Troy's rails. As long as you can get them they're great, I think they are somewhat busy with orders, but I've had good customer service experience with them, and they make great products.

+1 - No need for FF on a fighting rifle IMHO. Buy a Troy MRF-DI and never look back....

Yup - no question MI's are nice rails, (I've used them). They are however: heavier, bulkier and have a less robust mounting system than the Troy. Plus, they are more expensive. I think choosing rails, (MI, DD, YHM, Troy etc), is about getting the most robust and reliable rail within your pirce range. MI's are indeed nice, but they are not in the same league as a Troy....Not even close.

But I thought Troy rails warped all the time [shocked] [rofl]

I have no compunctions about entrusting my life to an MI product. Nothing wrong with Troy either. Don't think I'd say the same about UTG.
