Hello,

So I was looking at the ranges in NH and am having a hard time finding a place near me (nashua area) that would allow the kind of practice I like to keep up on (defensive style shooting, draw from holster, shooting and moving in pairs, transition work, ect).

So while I am continuing my search I started thinking.. This is NH! Why not find a nice secluded spot where I wont bug anybody. being a new resident myself, I am unsure what would qualify as a legal public area to go blasting away in. obviously safety is a concern, so a nice sand pit/steep hill/backstop is needed and would need to be a decent way away from the random hiker/jogger. but other then that I am not sure where I could legaly go and what would be an acceptable location to throw down some rounds.

Thanks!

My understanding of nh law is you must be 300 feet from any building without owners permission. That being said I would not shoot in a pit without the owners permission. Anything less could be trespassing. Also I do not know what the town laws may be in your town.

I'd also like to know if I can shoot in a secluded area in the Woodstock/ Lincoln area. The nearest range is 25 miles away so I'd like to shoot into a hill or sanded area etc. 300 feet sounds about right, can that be verified?

See RSAs 207:3-a, 207:3-c, and 644:13, and F&G, zoning, trespass, and basic safety would also be consideratings.

Read the RSAs for yourself, state prohibitions are minimal:
  1. within 300 feet of a permanently occupied dwelling (aka "a house"), except with permission of owner.
  2. Across or within 15 feet of a "road" (class I through V highway)
  3. in a "compact area", or within 300 feet of a building that is in a "compact area".

While it's easy to say "find an unofficial sandpit and remember to clean up after yourself", the "find" part of that statement is not as simple as it sounds.

Thanks for all the guidence! better safe then sorry when has to do with laws on this subject. Wish I could afford a bit of land with nothin on it but sadly all of my money is currently invested elsewhere (yes partialy in guns :) )

It might not be trespassing, but around here if someone finds someone they don't know shooting in their pit, its going to be the last time they do so. A lot of people with pits are O.K. with people they have MET shooting in them, so just ask first. You can be pretty much guaranteed that if a pit owner comes out and finds you shooting in their pit without letting them know you might not be charged with trespassing, but you will be asked to leave and not return.

This is why I love NH!! I drive 250 miles just to go shooting on my grandparent's 160 acres in Twin Mountain. My local range charges 30 bucks an hour just shoot and you cant even stand up and shoot. They have this old man range officer that goes around and breaks your balls if you shoot more than 1 shot every 3 seconds. Nothing better than dumping a 30 rd mag as fast as you can.
