Newbie to site. I think this is the place to post this. Let me try to outline the scenario.

VT property. 60+ acres. Never developed forest about to be developed by us. Seasonal cabin. We might only be there 4-6 weeks a year in total, spread out over every month, but who knows. Total area of clearing likely to be about 8 acres. Handful of neighbors, with their homes 1,200-1,600 feet away from shooting area. Muzzle direction away from them. Great safe cirque like backdrop area for target placements. No requirement to do anything on our part - we're all good, legal, clear to have fun, end of story.

But, I have thought: what if we wanted to be extra courteous, just to be neighborly?

Doing a little research on 1) "hanging baffles" with the idea of potentially hanging some using mature trees as anchor points, and 2) the possibility of creating a "woven/wattle fence" semi circle at the shooter's back (180 degrees from general muzzle direction) utilizing 3-4" saplings from clearing being done for fields. Who knows, maybe 10-12 feet up.

Anyone have experience or seen someone doing something along these lines? Noise mitigation for indoor ranges has tons of info. Noise mitigation for outdoor ranges built professionally has tons of info. Outdoor shooting area strategies for property owners along the lines of my thinking - not a lot of info. Edit to add: I can't do any berm/earth moving stuff, just fyi.

Yes, I am overthinking things. Yes, I'm an idiot. And, yes, I'm trying to enter the area with a low impact splash with regard to our shooting activities. There has been nothing but deep forest before us - so a noticeable change in general is on the horizon for the neighborhood.

Anyways, if anyone has anything they care to share, much appreciated. Just remember, my wife has already called me an idiot three times today, so you'll need to come up with something else!

How about digging a pit? Use the dirt you dig for backstop and sides. Have it sloping down and in, and if you have a backhoe, can dig drainage ditches on either side. Not going to give you a ton of long range, though. More for pistols and .22.

Maybe you can build 2 pits into opposing hillsides, one for target end and one for a platform/bench. Target end would have dirt walls for ricochets, bench end would have dirt walls for sound.

Just talking out my butt, but that is the first thing that comes to mind.

I don't have a s much acreage as you do, but I still have 3x the legal distance requirement for shooting from neighbors in NH.

During regular shooting / informal training I just blast away, sometimes suppressed, sometimes not.

Before the annual "guy's weekend" or other high volume shooting occasions, I'll give the closest neighbors a heads up a few weeks out, "FYI, guy's weekend is coming up; expect the shooting, tannerite, and fireworks."

Some of the neighbors stop by for the shooting, bbq, or fireworks. Some come for all three.

I have seen this baffle. It is used to mitigate the sound of .50cal rifles on a range with close neighbors.

Not a .50cal rifle and not used for sound mitigation, but we did shoot through it as a prop.

I appreciate the replies. The dirt moving thing is due to machinery access/topography.

And am picking up my now approved suppressor this week, which is another courtesy move I made.

I think the main point here is I am way overthinking. I think! lol

Don’t forget the clearing of 8 acres by magic wand.
What do you mean that you can’t move dirt?
The spot for shooting is a plateau/ledge - a bit hard to describe but different access issues than the clearing part. Valid question, though. I should have been more clear.

It was why I was wondering about a few additional strategies (baffles / wattle fence) if anyone has seen such.

To state the obvious, I am overthinking. It is time for my brain to be put in a time out!

So what’s your backstop on such a plateau? Haybales only worked in The Rifleman.

I got a neighbor who thought it would be ok to shoot into his brush pile. Too bad his neighbor didn’t approve with his 3 dogs beyond.
A bullet must not leave your property was the direct words from a Game Warden when I worked to reverse a discharge ordinance in town. You own it until it stops otherwise.
