I have an 1860 Army. I'm reading that the 1851 Navy is basically the same gun but with a smaller frame. Now, I see replacement cylinders for 1860/1851 (same cylinder for both models) which leads me to believe that the 1851 Navy frame is the same size as the Army, but perhaps just the grip frame is smaller? I know the Navy was originally .36 caliber but some reproductions are available in a bastardized .44 version.

I can buy a Navy grip frame and grips for maybe $75, and compare them, but that's a lot of money to spend on idle curiosity. And yes, I've tried researching this but only find vague terms like "larger" and "smaller", used by guys who already know the answer and assume everyone else does, too. Details, son, I need details.

There are a couple YouTube channels that spell it all I. I think everything black powder explains it. Maybe Mike Belivue too or however it’s spelled.

I believe it’s a grip frame thing.
Also the 51 is offered in 44 which I don’t believe. Is historically correct but some people prefer the octagon barrel and 44 combo.
