Questions about Braintree membership

I did see that there is a dedicated thread for Braintree but that seemed to be more geared towards the grounds/facilities; I have specific questions regarding membership. I'm beginning the process of getting my class A and as I am in Boston, I need a gun club membership. I did quite a bit of research on area clubs and liked Braintree the best (it's only a half hour drive). I found a good trainer on their website and will be taking my basic pistol safety course there and wanted to know if anyone could share their experiences in joining the club. Based on the info on their website, I had a couple specific concerns:

I need a letter stating that I am a member of a gun club; would they provide this based on me being a 'prospective' member?

I noticed that I must attend a safety meeting, which makes perfect sense, but that the next one is not until September 13...does that mean I can't join/get a letter of intent to join until after that date? The same goes for the new member orientation meeting.

It seems for this, or perhaps any gun club in the area, I need sponsors, or to go before a committee to be accepted into the club. How do I find sponsors?

Thanks in advance!

I'm a 10 year member of BR&P as well as an RSO there, so feel free to Email me with any future questions if you wish.

- Yes, some club officers are Notaries and the club has a form letter which they give you, notarized, at the end of the New Member Class.

- Ask an officer wrt getting the letter earlier based on having made application to the club prior to the September New Member Class. I'll admit that I do not know the answer to that question. You can send an Email to the President of the club off the website www.brp.org and Eric is pretty prompt at returning messages. To answer the other part of your question, there is no class in August and thus you can't join until September.

- No committee required for BR&P, there is no inquisition in order to join. If you don't have a sponsor, the officers should take care of that at the Class. If you don't currently have a LTC and don't already know someone who's a member of the club, it could be a bit tricky . . . but "normally" if you shoot as a guest of a member and they have confidence that you're an OK person and exhibit good range safety skills they will sign for you. At least that is the criteria that I use.

Excellent, thanks for the advice. I've sent an email through the 'Contact Us' portal to that effect. Hopefully I'll get a decent look at the facilities on Saturday; I'm very excited.

I've been a member for just over a year now. Unless things have changed, below is what I got when I joined.

They will provide a notarized letter stating that you will become a member as soon as you provide proof that you have been issued a firearms license.

Correct. Safety meeting and new member orientation meeting are one in the same.

BRP did not require a sponsor. Just sign up and attend the next orientation meeting, listen to what they say, pass the test and you're good to go. If you find that you do need a sponsor, PM me and we'll work something out.

Good luck.

Thanks so much Len and Kevin...I spoke to Paul at BRP and unfortunatly I cannot get a letter from them until the September 13th class. I still plan to join, but would like to set about getting my LTC before then as I understand it to be a longish process to those of us within the confines of Boston. I understand that there are several public clubs out there, I may also officially join one of the NH ranges I shoot at with friends up there in freedomland, I just need to make sure that would count for the purposes of getting my LTC.

As an aside, anyone at BRP who'd show me the ranges, I'd gladly buy ammo :)

As I've always understood it:
You do not need a reference on your app. This was a requirement when a FID was not required to own long arms. Today everyone undergoes a background check to get licensed so the reference requirement is moot.

If you have kids ages 11-18 bring them any Friday night to look at our juniors program.
Go to the club any Sunday morning and look around the ranges. They are closed until 12 noon on Sundays. Ask anyone there to show you around.
