Reading about the various clubs in my area (metro-west), it seems like HSA might be a good match for my interests. Could someone familiar with the club tell me if I can practice at any of their ranges defensive use of my pistol, e.g. drawing and shooting from a holster (and even better, if I could get formal or informal training). Also, I saw an earlier post that mentioned they allowed defensive shotgun use at the outdoor range. I have a Remington 870 I wanted to "break-in"/get acclimated to/practice with. Is this correct?

As far as joining, I see from their web site I need to bring the membership form to a general or director's meeting. Should I try to make prior arrangements with anyone at the club to introduce myself and let them know I'm coming?

Thanks for your advise!

Drawing from holster is definitely ok in pistol bays. HSA is an awesome club, free of Fuddery.

I recommend visiting on a Wednesday evening, they've got a great group of people practicing USPSA (action shooting) including holster draws, movement and other skills. If you stop by on a Wednesday (after 5 or 5:30 I believe) they'll show you around and make sure all your questions are answered.

I'm a member and I can also give this a huge +1. I don't have the shotties for clay shooting but I have a couple defensive shotguns I wanted to shoot and break in. A mossberg 590a1 and a ksg. I use an undeveloped pit and either set up my own targets or put clays in the bottom half of the berm. It's some of the best times I have had at the HSA so far. Everyone is very friendly and you can pm me if you have any questions.

Chris

Also a member and it's a great club. If you can't make a Wednesday night I can ask one of the BODs to give you a tour around to see the place. Very active club with a lot of different kinds of shooting going on. Bullseye, IPSC, Highpower, Skeet, Trap, etc'.

I'm also a new member, my wife and I both absolutely LOVE shooting the steel targets in the pistol bays, but are looking to maybe get into some rifle shooting or skeet when we have the extra $$

Great club though, very helpful guys, The president's name is Bob and he immediately introduced himself to me when i came to the monthly meeting. Extremely welcoming group, I can honestly say they make you feel like you belong!

Bob is a great guy. I swear he knows every member by name. Very friendly and a fun guy to shoot with. He's on the IPSC team that shoots on Wednesday nights.

He also lurks here on NES from time to time.

This sounds great! Thanks, everyone, for the fast replies. I see from their calendar that the next BOD mtg is next Monday (5/6), so I think I'll head over then with an application form (and $$ for the fees). Should I just go over then, or maybe email one of the BOD's first to let them know I will be applying?

It's as easy as showing up. No appointment or heads up required. Bringing a check book and a completed application is recommended.

You can simply show up at the meeting with the application, check, and proof of 2A group membership and we will (most likely) vote you in. [grin]

If you are available tonight any time after 5/5:30, come on by the pistol pits and say hello. (See my sig line) [smile] I hope to be there by then or a little after. Bob will probably be around as well as some other active members.

Thanks for the invitation, Michael. I'm not 100% certain I'll be able to come tonight, but I'll try. In any event, I'll come Monday at 7:30 with the application and the rest.

For anyone following this thread or searching it later, I drove over and had a tour. Really nice facilities, and very friendly folks out shooting this night. Thanks Bob and Michael.

Holster draw/defensive practice is acceptable on all of the outdoor pistol bays. Long guns may be used only on the rifle range (100/200 yards) or on the far pistol bay (33 yards deep), plus, of course, trap and skeet on those ranges. Shooting on the rifle range is limited to conventional shooting (no cross-shooting of targets), however, there is no such restriction on the 33 yard pistol/rifle range.

I'm looking to join as well and I'll also be at the meeting on Monday. Any chance I could get a look at the facilities before then?

Are metal targets allowed? Also, I've seen mention of use of specific target holders. Do we have to make/bring our own or are there some at the club to use?

Metal targets are allowed, and provided on the rifle range and the pistol bays (not on the skeet & trap range:)) - yes, you will need your own target holder, but they are easy to do. I will be there around 1030ish on Sunday, probably in the skeet area. There is a black powder weekend in progress and they are camped all over the grounds. Ask for Bob - AKA El Prez.

Just read the directions for the outdoor target holder and am planning to build mine soon. Anyone have any tips or recommendations?

I'm not really sure what the indoor target holder is supposed to look like. Anyone have a pic of the final result?

I'm curious why the rifle target holder requires 2x 8' pieces and the handgun one requires 3?

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know about the 2 vs 3 pieces of strapping, I'll find out and report back.

The indoor range target holders are super simple. I use 1/2" wood dowels cut to length and drilled for a binder clip and simply run a saw over the end to make the notch for the carrier to hold it. I make them a few at a time because they always seem to catch a stray round every once in a while.
